GOG have just added 15 NEO GEO classic titles and some of them have Linux support, here's a run-down for you.

Out of the 15 they now have, 7 have "official" Linux support:

  • FATAL FURY SPECIAL
  • SAMURAI SHODOWN 2
  • SAMURAI SHODOWN V
  • THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2000
  • THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2002 CLASSIC
  • BLAZING STAR
  • KING OF THE MONSTERS

All the others, like the Metal Slug series weirdly have unsupported Linux versions included as "bonus" content.

See the GOG news about it here.

Worth noting, there was a Humble Bundle that had these and more back in 2015, so it's likely Humble had some sort of exclusive deal on them for a while. Hopefully they will add more in future!

Will hopefully please some of you that missed the previous Humble Bundle with them in. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: meggermanBit of a shame these aren't all available in steam, they would make good SteamOS titles for local multiplayer. Still it's good that there available from GOG.

They are also available on Humble Bundle. I install them on my machines and my STEAMOS HTPC and they are some of the most played games in my home.

Need to try Humblebundle again sometime, the website keeps crapping out in my browser.

Quoting: HamishI am honestly surprised that GOG.com allowed that, knowing how anal they used to be about providing support for every one of their products.

The Galaxy client is the one to blame for that, apparently. As it seems, all the games without official Linux support include Galaxy features, and since there's no Galaxy for Linux, there's no official Linux support either. A rather stupid reason if you ask me, but here's that.

Quoting: HamishWhat I would love to see is for games on GOG.com with source ports to include just the relevant game data files as unsupported bonus content like this, so that you do not need to download Windows installers and binaries in order to play them on Linux or macOS (or indeed even on Windows).

You probably already know that, but the Windows installers are created with Inno Setup so they can all be extracted with innoextract. It'd be a little redundant to offer the assets separately in a zipfile.

Quoting: iplaygameswearingatuxCould anyone please confirm whether the games are playable in MAME?

I wrote a slightly detailed guide how to make them work in MAME, you can find the link here (links to gog.com forums)

I would much prefer to have a zip/tarball of the assets, than have to contribute to the Windows d/l statistics. Hell, even a simple installer for the assets only would be great.

Classic, not Unlimited Match? Aww, but I wanna play as Li Xiangfei, the best character. Oh well, Metal Slug is awesome at least.

That guides seems really complicated. I have the HB versions and I just dump the neogeo.zip and the game.zips and they work as is. Were GOG versions altered?

Why would I spend money on these when I could just run these games in an emulator for free?

Can you please upload a screenshot of what's inside the neogeo.zip in the HB version? If they're altered I wouldn't as I don't own the HB version.
