Steam Controller & Steam Link on sale for a few days, the Link is especially cheap

nice! any chance to get this discount on amazon?

I picked up the Steam Link during the last sale (it works great even over my WiFi). I wish the percentages were reversed there so I could get a second Steam Controller on the cheap. :D

The SC its on amazon too. But if I want it on my country I would have to pay $63 because taxes and etc.

For anybody in the US with Prime or if you meet the $25 minimum it's cheaper to buy it from Amazon since Valve charges us $6-$8 S&H.

I don't have the controller, but I absolutely love my Steam Link. It's an awesome way to play PC games on the big screen. Wifi works great, even with three or four other devices being used simultaneously. The only time I've had any kind of issue with it is when somebody else has a access point on the same channel, which is usually easy to fix. A wired network is definitely a better option, but I'm still happy with the wireless performance.

Anyone playing tw:warhammer, hollow knight, tomb raider etc. with it? What is your experience? Is it easier to set the vertical and horizontal camera angle with it compared to an xbox-like controller? I'd problems with controllers at 3rd person action games and I'm interested if the sc could solve that.

I find it great for Tomb Raider like games. But I warn you: the first five minutes using it will be very confusing and uncomfortable. Just relax and be patient. After you are over the steep learning curve (a few days to a week), you will find it a nice tool for the job of playing certain types of games.

And if you find yourself feeling handicapped in some games for using it, remember that the PC platform allows you to use just what you like for whatever game you are playing, a luxury not available on the consoles.

In the UK you can get them at those prices at Game.co.uk and with free delivery. I picked up the Steam Link for that price the last time it was on sale at Game. One of the best bargain purchases I've made as its worked out great for my girlfriend and I on the couch (though mostly for Pacman :D ). It's a shame that AMD hardware video encoding still does not work on Linux for Steam In-Home streaming. Come on Valve. VA-API encoding has been around for ages.

A) not a lot changes
B) some people, like you, don't seem to like it when I am optimistic about things. Take a look at your comments on the "steam has 3k linux games" article as an example

Plenty actually. It requires a PC to use, like a Linux PC.

Definitely recommend, Rocket League is a blast to play with this controller.

The only thing I know about Steam-link is that is that one thing that killed "Steam Machines" (because in place of unreasonably expensive and impotent "Steam Machine" one can get a cheap "Steam-link" and stream all of the games from Windows PC everyone has by default).

Had one too many beers last night and bought the Steam Link as well xD Hoopefully plays nicely and I can use some games on the big TV :D

Yes. I tried streaming from my:

• Ubuntu 16.04 laptop(full success)


• Ubuntu 16.04 desktop (no sound streamed sadly, probably some configuration-specific issues - I had to install some custom sound driver on original installation of 12.04 if I recall correctly)


• and Macbook (worked ok after steam client update)

Talking about that... Just got the Steam survey when I installed Ubuntu-Gnome on top of my Ubuntu vanilla previous edition.

I've played tomb raider and shadow of mordor with a controller for like 3-4 hours each but it was an unpleasant experience. But when I've switched back to kb+m the games became so easy that I needed to increase the difficulty. I'm playing hollow knight, dreamfall chapters and life is strange and some platformers with a controller and they feel ok. Everything else is terrible. However, the trackpad seems promising but I'm not sure about it and I don't want more unused hardware around :P

Actually, it was a third person view game (Batman:AA) that made me buy a Xbox 360 controller, seven years ago. When escaping from Killer Crock on the sewers, the game changed the view to a angle that made impossible to control with a keyboard, using the A and S keys to run at a diagonal angle, that did not align with the path. I keep dying all the time, so I bought a controller and things became much more easy.

Latter, when doing the challenges, trying to beat 20 to 30 henchmen, it was a million times easier to do the combos in a controller than with the mouse/keyboard.

Today, I only use the mouse when things become a lot hairier in a FPS, otherwise is controller only. I became so good using it after a few months, that playing L4D2 in the Death's Door mutation (if you hit the floor you die, no medkits are available) became a reality. And if you played it, you now how hardcore it is.

The only friend I have that did not liked the SC, was the one that keep trying using the right touchpad like a analog stick. I keep telling him to use it like a trackball, then he got mad and give it up. Latter, he tried it again and became less enraged by taking my advice, but still thought that it takes too much effort to be proficient in one.

Why go through all that trouble when you can get a Raspberry Pi for dirt cheap?

Commodity hardware is frequently cheaper at a price point for comparable hardware (especially on sale). However, after finally finding the specs on the Link, it didn't look that impressive, so for the trouble, not worth it for me.
