If you’ve ever wanted to pretend you’re a wolf and try to survive out in the wild, then you’re in luck. WolfQuest [Official Site, Steam] allows you to do all that and more.
Putting you in the paws of a two-year-old gray wolf in Yellowstone National Park, WolfQuest is a game about survival. Finding out how to survive, estabilishing a territory of your own and ensuring the survival of your pack are all things you can do. It’s a game you can play alone or with friends and was developed with the collaboration of various educational institutions.
The current test build for Linux is opt-in and you can find instructions on how to do that here. The Linux build is still likely rough around the edges but hopefully it’ll become polished and official soon. Even if I’m not really into simulator-type games it’s still nice to see games of all stripes make their way onto Linux, particularly of the educational variety. There's a demo out but it's unfortunately not available for Linux. Perhaps if people ask for one, it'll be made available as the developer seems to be responsive to feedback.

QuoteI finally got a test build for Linux, if anyone wants to try it. (I don't have a Linux system so I have no idea how well it works.)
I bet putting a Linux installation to a machine for testing it must be very hard.
What kind of devs we are dealing with?

Apparently a group of devs from Minnesota Zoo and some educational institutions.

I honestly thought this would be an asset flip.
This is an actual game ?
And actual zoo keepers had input ?
Odd. I would expect something a little more .... polished , I guess ?:(
Also it reminds me of this old abandonware :

mhhh
right now it only seems to be possible if you own the game. Otherwise it doesn't show up in the steam libarary and therefore you can't opt-in
Or am I seeing that wrong?
Edit: confirmed by the developer. He said the Linux version still has quite some issues so he doesn't wanna put out an official Linux demo

Oh yeah, I played this on Windows years ago back when it was a free download (probably around 2011–2012). Never thought I'd see it on Linux. :D
Don't expect Valve levels of polish, but it's a decent game (even if the controls can be a bit fiddly, or at least they were when I last played it; perhaps that's been improved by now). The environment is absolutely gorgeous—it's areas taken straight from the landscape of Yellowstone National Park—and I liked the use of a "smell" mechanic, where you can switch to a mode where you can see scent trails left by animals moving about and follow (or avoid) them. It's a really neat mechanic that I've never seen in another game. Plus the music is great. :)
Edit: Wow, just glancing over the list of achievements it looks like they've added quite a bit more stuff than when I last played!

I am a cat person myself, so I recommend Shelter 2. The graphics are a lot simpler, but also look a helluva lot better. It's so very beautiful.
Seriously cheap on Humble store right now:

As another cat person thanks for the tip.

Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.
