CRYPTARK [Steam, Official Site], a roguelike 2D sci-fi shooter from Alientrap that I think is damn good is officially launching on June 20th.

The game has been in development for over two years and it's finally coming to a close this month. It's enjoyed a healthy life in Early Access with plenty of updates.

The style of it is fantastic and every time I play it I'm really quite impressed. I always love the look of games by Alientrap. I'm actually surprised it's not more popular, considering how polished it feels.

About the game
QuoteCryptark is a 2D roguelike shooter that challenges players with boarding and neutralizing procedurally generated alien starships to earn income for their Privateering enterprise. Purchase improved equipment and weapons to tackle more dangerous targets, but be cautious as failure will result in a loss of investment and profit. The decaying alien arks will defend themselves from intruders with a wide arsenal of cyborg monstrosities, robotics, and security systems, all obstacles that must be surpassed to achieve victory, the destruction of the ship’s central System Core.

I do recommend checking it out. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

There is no real need for a demo if you use steam. You can refund the game for any reason if you haven't played longer than 2 hours. So enough time for trying the game.

I don't like side scrollers much, but the animation looks really good in that trailer. I'm actually a bit interested now.

It's not a side scroller. 2D yes, but you can fly in all directions to explore.

It's still viewed from a side camera so it's still a side scroller.

This is not really a roguelike, but still looks pretty badass.

I get what you're saying, totally do, but side scroller is a term not usually used for games like this where you have complete freedom of direction, but in 2D. A side scrolling is generally restricted to moving one way across the screen to progress.

Hmm... not sure who is right, but in my mind, games like Starbound and Metroid are side scrollers, where you aren't always headed the same direction. Maybe I'm wrong, but at least you see my perspective now.
