As I said, that's something developers should fix, whether game or engine developers, whoever is relevant. Bundling it as a workaround is doable (I did that a few times already and I mentioned it in GOG's Linux FAQ thread), but it's quite a clunky fix if that library especially has security issues.

Do you? You'll get same response from Steam, if you use Arch.
I use Arch and I have had people working for Valve with the whole [Valve] tags by their names suggest possible fixes for Arch (Via forums). I even had one suggest trying the steam-native version once in the past. Not to say that it's always the best help, but it's not just "Use Ubuntu". Also, they even chip in a litte sometimes in some of the HTC Vive stuff. Though I do admit I have gotten more help within the community than Valve overall. Nor should I expect help directly from them with such a large userbase. That and they have a F on customer service for trying to automate everything over hiring people, lol. (I wish that would get fixed already).

As for my GoG experince it's more of less the same as "Alm888".

Not saying GoG sucks overall. I still play the gambling game with buying from GoG. As I have 190 games on my GoG account. Of course about 20-30 are from GoG Connect & my games aren't exactly all popular demand games that everyone flocks too. If GoG Galaxy for Linux was out I probably would buy a wider selection. (Given it all worked correctly). Because I will buy a Steam copy over a GoG copy because Steam has cloud saving. Yet now some GoG games get cloud saves with a Linux copy, but no GoG Galaxy. (I just like the security of not losing my game saves).

I don't really mind copying saves. Never used cloud saving really. I back up important saves anyway.

Do you have a application for it or do you do it manually? Because if you backup tons of saves manually you must have gone mental by now. :P At least I would have if I are not already. Given games like to throw their save files in one of many locations. Hidden folders, one of the random Steam game ID folders, the game folder, et cetera. Even after the years of CD & DVD games doing it, game saves are still so scattered sometimes. My problem with saves is more a quanity issue than anything, as I game hop a bit. Play one game for a little, go to the next for a few, another, and then rinse and repeat.

... because if the games are DRM free, they are DRM free on Steam too and if they are not, then they aren't and won't ever be on GOG anyway...

This is actually not true. It's surprising to me how many games are available DRM free from GOG and Humble, and are DRM'ed on Steam. Off the top of my head, both Firewatch and Hand of Fate are available DRM free from GOG, and both are DRM'ed on Steam. I know there's more, but those are the two I remember right now.

For each particular game, when let's say I finished a playthrough and want to preserve it, I just back saves up manually. Not a big deal I think.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is another one. Buying from GOG simply guarantees avoiding all this mess.

heh I rebought KOTOR1 for mobile and KOTOR2 for steam. And I had the CD version from a millennia ago lol..

Also while linux is about choice you should really consider using ubuntu or steamos if you want to play on linux...

also GOG ffs put galaxy on linux!

I love GOG Connect, but it's so frustrating there's no notification service... I don't want to have to check the GOG connect page all the time to see if it's changed. Wish they would just send email when a game you own on steam becomes eligible

edit: that said, I picked up 12 games from this batch of Connect, so I can't rightly complain all that much

GOG is sometimes unfathomable: for example, they newly sell Fallout3, Fallout NV and Oblivion. Fallout3 and NV come with many language supported...but for Oblivion, only english XD ... why? ....with no communication on this point as for linux!

That's a pity because one guy did all wine wrappers so the installations are really easy using wine (download it here and a link for many other windows-only-game wine-wrappers

GOG: I like drm-free, people visiting and sharing like "adamhm". I dislike no communication, no linux version on many games that have native port, no effort for linux users, weird support of languages when they are available

That could work if GOG Galaxy worked on Linux...

I'd argue Galaxy is only marginally useful for current GOG users, who come to GOG to buy DRM-free games. But to gain more used to DRM Steam users, Galaxy can help. I suppose GOG don't see Linux Steam users as a major point of focus. I.e. DRM-free Linux users are already using GOG, and Steam Linux users are just a small percentage of all Steam users. So I think it's just a matter of priority. Kind of annoying for Steam Linux users I suppose, but can make sense from GOG's priority perspectives.

It's a bit more then annoying since GOG is using the client for Multiplayer-Authentication. Which results in that the Linux-Version is added single-player only if it is added at all.

However GOG should get their priorities right. My Steam-Library is meanwhile a lot bigger then my GOG-Library and I spent at least 10 times more money on Steam then on GOG.

Well GOG kinda makes me fill a bit guilty since I haven't purchased anything from them but I have around 133 Games in my Library out of the 7000+ Games on steam.... :o

Well sometimes I want to buy things from GOG but then...... oups!!! No Steam key :'(
So at the end I buy games from Humble which they offer both DRM Free + Steam key or directly from steam.

GOG Connect adds my steam games to GOG Library for FREE but when I want to purchase games from GOG they dont give me a steam key... So Why they dont offer a steam key as an optional option ?

Reasonably all Steam Gamers they will continue buying games for Steam and they will wait for GOG to connect their games for FREE! So why GOG is doing this :o?

Here come a thought: they could partner with publishers to offer free steam key when you buy a game on GOG (or redeem it to your linked account; this would avoid keys being resold).

12 games added to my GOG library... not bad :) I second the thoughts on the galaxy client, though. And I wish the humble monthly bundle would offer GOG keys as well :)

It doesn't make sense really. GOG is competing with Steam, and giving out Steam keys means promoting their competitor. So if anything like that would happen, it would be Steam's project (i.e. Steam connect or whatever).

I would argue that it doesn't make sense for Steam, since (based on my totally biased perspective) they are the biggest by far; and as such, they don't need to grab customers from GOG.

I get your point, however. But as great as GOG connect is, I probably won't switch my primary store anytime soon, given the number of games I have on steam (lock-in FTW -_-). And with every game I buy on Steam instead of GOG, Steam gets money instead of GOG (which actually don't bother me that much, as long as they support Linux).

To put a dent in steam's profit, my suggestion would probably work (but then you risk losing customers to Steam, as you said). Maybe add an extra fee for the "Steam Connect" functionality on GOG? Or make some time-limited promotions? I don't really know; but at the end of the day, isn't part of the DRM-free appeal the lack of vendor lock-in?

Sure, it might hurt the bottom line a bit, but that's arguably already the situation they are in with they DRM-free model. And with such a business model, what makes customers come to you instead of the competition, if not the fact that they are respected/listened to/well treated? I think that it would tremendously increase the value of the GOG store. Wasn't the Humble Store doing the same at the beginning, before it went full steam key-reseller?
