For those not in the loop, the developers recently gave away millions of copies for free for a limited time. Now, you can only buy PAYDAY 2 - Ultimate Edition which includes all the previously released DLC.

If, like me, you had the game previously you can pay a fee to upgrade to the Ultimate Edition at a reduced rate compared to what it would have been before. It's not a bad deal really, I'm missing 22 DLC and they are offering 50% off all the missing DLC with the upgrade deal. That's not bad at all in my opinion.

They will also be offering all DLC in future (besides the Ethan and Hila Character Pack) for free, so that's pretty decent too.

I like what they've done, it just makes sense.

I will look to arrange some games with the community, thanks in part due to a bunch of you likely having it now from the free deal. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I saw the price and I laughed badly. Seriously, WTF? There is a givaway of 5 million copies of basic version of the game, and a moment later there is an ultimate edition of a game for 45 euro? 4 years old game for 45 euro? What is it - GTA V?
I can't imagine what would DLCs have to include in order to force me to pay 45 euro for them...
I'm not against paying 45 euro for game - there are games worth such an amount of money. But seriously - ultimate version of a game that you could have in basic version for free? I can't understand that business model.
The other topic is that gaming industry is in terrible shape. Most of the game developers try to sell us the same product once again for ridiculous price. The whole idea of remasters, game of the year edition and ultimate editions is pure evil.
I can understand game of the year edition for games that have some interesting story DLCs, for example Witcher 3. 2 great DLCs that enhance main story - brilliant, I understand why they were created.
But Payday 2...
I may be ignorant here, but I have to ask. Seriously - what new content adds Ultimate edition to basic version of the game? What can possibly be created in the same multiplayer focused product to force people to pay 45 euro for it? I could google it, but honestly I want to read it in this thread and read your opinion about current state of the gaming industry.

In short AAA publishers are moving quite hard towards games as a service rather than games as physical goods.
We moved from CDs and Floppy Disks and Cartridges sold in shops to online downloads and company servers hosting multiplayer.
The free to play model was fine until its microtransactions were tacked on to full price games.
Not to mention bad DLC.

The problem is as long as there is a large enough group of consumers that eat this s*** up , companies will keep pulling it. If the marketing can convince people to pre-order , they will.
If they convince people to pay for DLC of only cosmetic skins they will do it again and again.
If they can convince consumers to pay for micro transactions they will implement it wherever possible.

Honestly I do not see good things in the gaming scene, but I restrict this opinion to AAA studios.

I have a feeling Indie devs and medium sized companies will be doing just fine since they can't afford to aggravate consumers.

Ah, so that's why they gave it away for free. They're hoping folks will spend the money to upgrade to the ultimate edition since "Gee, I already own the game, so..."

Clever marketing ploy.

Meanwhile, I'm saying, "Thanks for the free game!"

This!

I have a group of friends that are very like minded and when we gather to play games we are usually all playing something indie or something retro (GOG or even older from PC's graveyard years).

Then I have a few AAA supporters friends. They usually try to get us to go along with what they recently fancy but it's all a lot of nonsense and shit to me. They will literally drop games less then 2 months in with constant complaints about it and become forgetful when the next shiny comes along.

Meanwhile, the rest of us are playing 'Towerfall Ascension 8 Player', 'Mother Russia Bleeds', 'Pac-Man 256' or other stuff someone discovered having a jolly ole time @ 1/2 the cost and 90% less complaints.

You still get access to the new stuff they release (which is free from now on), and Overkill has stated that they want to create free variations of the most popular DLC weapons, like a grenade launcher or the crossbow.

Quoting: scaineIf they've fixed in-game voice chat, I might actually buy this .... I often do as well, but there was a period of a few weeks where I was regularly kicked from heists for ignoring in-game voice chat. I think it'll mainly only affect stealth missions, where the later missions are basically impossible without proper collaboration and timing.

I wouldn't let that stop you. I use a mic (because Win players can hear our mic) and tell people early on that my game is "buggy" and I can't hear chat. People are usually cool with that. I'd even say that most people seem to use text chat, anyway. As far as stealthing goes, I really don't have much first-hand experience, I play heists "loud" exclusively at this point. Payday's community is generally very helpful and pretty tolerant of newbies, but there's always been a fraction of buttheads who are too quick to kick without cause or explanation. Don't let them drive you away.

Quoting: DribbleondoThey haven't and likely won't. Annoying as that may be, I legitimately never knew anyone who even used it.

I use it pretty regularly, actually; (Though, I'm inclined to agree that they're unlikely to fix it.) I use it to say a quick "thanks" when someone gets me up, and lately I use it to offer bits of quick advice to newer players.

The thing is that before the Ultimate Edition the game plus all DLCs amounted to more than 170€, so in that respect 45€ can be seen as "reasonable". On top of that they gave away the base game to a lot of people and I guess the price to get all the missing DLCs will be less than the full price for the Ultimate Edition, that is not as evil as you seem to put it ;)

By the way they're giving away codes for 2 DLC's :
