Today I took a look at GunHero [Steam, Official Site], an action platformer with a visual style very similar to Broforce. As a huge Broforce fan I was eager to give it a run!

I'm going to be honest, the entire intro sequence made me utterly cringe. Some games are so stupid they're funny, but the intro here was just awful.

The gameplay is very similar to Broforce, quite shockingly so. It's quite obviously inspired greatly by it, but since it doesn't have level destruction is does play out quite differently. You have to think a little more on what you're going to do, since you can't just blow a hole in a level to get around an enemy.

Annoyingly, the game is not stable at all. It frequently crashes to the desktop and has made any attempt at reviewing it a real nuisance. It's a shame, because the gameplay actually seems fun, challenging and probably a good one to buy for action platformer fans.

I've emailed the developer about it, so hopefully they can patch it and we can give it a test again then and do a proper review. Right now though, it's not stable enough to recommend or to actually get far enough into it before it crashes to gather any real thoughts. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Yeah, why didn't they simply make it as pretty as Owlboy? It's just art, right? It's not like it requires real talent, skill, effort or time. I'm sure the developer appreciates and will take heed of your super constructive criticism. [/snark]

Sorry edgelord but i am sick and tired of pixel crap games there are so many and i am so over them. Yes creating a game takes talent, but i hope that creativity would lead them to look at just how many pixel barf games (broforce is a fun game but looks terrible) are available and then decide on a different art style.

Well, AFAIK you are not obliged to buy "this bad pixel shite". But reading the devblog it seems as if it is just one person working on this game. Cut him some slack - he might be just fond of "pixel barf games".

That's fine but i don't actually care and nor should the developer its just one persons opinion. This is a forum right to comment on stories i have done so and you don't agree the end.

Wonder Boy is pixel-art done right. A game that was originally pixelated, redone, with the option to switch back and forth. Cave Story Plus did something similar, but with just slightly more pixels and terribly remixed music. I'd love to play the 3DS version. Still holding out for proper emulation.

Sadly, there's more to it than picking a style. They also need the skill and the resources to produce said art or the cash to commission it. It is extremely unrealistic to expect every developer to be equally talented in all aspects of their work. I thought my point was obvious, but I guess it got lost in the sarcasm.

Go ahead, rail at big budget team projects but being mad at indies for looking cheap is just inane and frankly obnoxious. Who appointed you the grand arbitrator of aesthetic value anyway?

Speaking for myself, I like AAA titles like Dying Light, Mad Max, Hitman, and so on. BUT I also really like a lot of Pixel Art games. I highly recommend these Pixel Art games:

Broforce, Rogue Legacy, FTL, PixelJunk Shooter, Dungeon Warfare, Mini Thief, Hotline Miami, Kingdom: New Lands, The Curious Expedition, Crypt of the Necrodancer.

Haven't got around to playing Owlboy, Party Hard, Chroma Squad, and others - But I'm sure they're pretty awesome too.

Finishing off with - There are plenty of junk Pixel Art games too - One needs to sift the chaff from the wheat.
