You asked, some of you repeatedly and so I listened. GOL now officially runs a server for Rust [Steam] and you're all welcome to join in.
You can find it as "gamingonlinux.com" in the community tab, or direct IP: 163.172.17.175:30616. I also sorted out one of those nifty banners for it:
Note: The first Thursday of every month the server gets reset, this is not controlled by us. It's current a feature of the game.
While Garry from Facepunch has said some silly things in the past about Linux, the game actually runs really quite nicely. You shouldn't take what he says too seriously either, as he loves a good troll. You do currently seem to need to put it into Windowed mode or it won't register any input.
It's quite likely we will use this server in future livestreams and play with the community sessions, which could be quite fun with a good bit of PVP.
We also run other game servers, you can see them all on this page.
Enjoy!

Is this another annoying unity bug? Because shroud of the avatar also has this problem...

Is Rust supporting Vulkan on Linux? I read there should be Vulkan support. Does anybody know how well it works at the moment? So far there is no Vulkan ssupport on Linux, as far as i know.

I'll have to make an effort to carve out some time and hop on. I've always enjoyed this game but am just so horrible at the PvP and can't devote the full-time job amount of time to it that it seems to drag out of many players. But, a Linux server sounds like a good cause and good fun, thus making for a good excuse.

It is quite annoying that I cannot move my mouse pointer outside the game without opening inventory or main menu. Even if I use shortcut to warp mouse to my other monitor, the game warps it back.

I'm so used to just hit esc or birng up inventory and then go to my other monitor so its not a problem for me

ARK stops warping my cursor once it is outside the game window, which is how it should be. Although even ark is a bit annoying as it detects the cursor move and move the field of view first. Games like rust and ark are games where you want to see what is going on while doing other stuff.

What kind of performance are people getting in Rust?
I've had it in my library and never really played it. I"m getting ~25fps on any settings other than the lowest, where I can maintain ~60fps.
Is this normal Linux performance for Rust?

I run it on the second-best setting (beautiful, I think) and it rests right at 99 for the most part. It will dip into eighties and high seventies if it is trying to render in something taxing or during a fight.
But, I run it on Linux with a GTX1070 and a pretty stout computer whereas if I run under Win7 with a GTX750ti and a solid but inferior rig, I get performance more in line with yours than with mine under Linux.
My own experiences would lead me to think that the game is just demanding regardless of OS, but I've read an awful lot of people complaining of poor Linux performance that figure to do better than they are when they get into specifics. Basically, I'm no help other than to say it might be normal linux performace for some setups based on what I've read in the past, but also that you can do much, much better.

What kind of performance are people getting in Rust?I run it on reasonable settings, a mix of medium/high i think with usually around 70-80FPS.

Damn! I wonder if the budget side of my 970 is starting to show...
I'm going to mess with my settings to see if I can get it to run reasonably on medium.
Edit: I just played around with NVidia Settings open on a secondary monitor and any preset above the lowest would use > 4GB of VRAM causing insane slowdown. So, it looks like a 1080 ti is in my future (or whatever is top of the line after I save to get my house rewired that is :P).
