Join the fun on our new server for Rust

You asked, some of you repeatedly and so I listened. GOL now officially runs a server for Rust [Steam] and you're all welcome to join in.

You can find it as "gamingonlinux.com" in the community tab, or direct IP: 163.172.17.175:30616. I also sorted out one of those nifty banners for it:

Note: The first Thursday of every month the server gets reset, this is not controlled by us. It's current a feature of the game.

While Garry from Facepunch has said some silly things in the past about Linux, the game actually runs really quite nicely. You shouldn't take what he says too seriously either, as he loves a good troll. You do currently seem to need to put it into Windowed mode or it won't register any input.

It's quite likely we will use this server in future livestreams and play with the community sessions, which could be quite fun with a good bit of PVP.

We also run other game servers, you can see them all on this page.

Enjoy! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Any chance for a PVE server?

Sorry, no. There's very little non-PVP in Rust and I don't want to split people in half. The fun of Rust is the PVP the whole game is designed around it.

Ah, bummer then. I was hoping for something more like The Long Dark, exploration and stuff, fighting elements and fauna.

I'm a pretty big Rust fan and I've been playing it on Linux for almost 2 years now so I think I can provide some insight into the questions folks have been asking about it :)

Performance - Rust's performance on Linux has never been *great* because it uses bleeding-edge features of the Unity engine. For what its worth, it doesn't even run on Windows that great, depending on the build version. My recommendation is to only run the game on "Fastest" or "Fast" preset and then tweak the graphics settings in-game to your liking. Also, the Unity engine tends to favor Nvidia cards so if you are using an AMD card, make sure you have the latest drivers.

PVP - Rust is whatever you want it to be. If you want to build, then build. If you want to raid and PVP, then do that. But it doesn't have to be PVP. If you don't want to raid people, then don't. But part of the fun of Rust is never really knowing if your base is safe, that's why you build traps and stuff; to protect your stuff.

Rust is a really fun game but it has a rather notorious reputation for being very PVP heavy. If everyone just agrees not to kill each other on sight, then you don't have to worry about it, right? :P

Quoting: KetilARK stops warping my cursor once it is outside the game window, which is how it should be. Although even ark is a bit annoying as it detects the cursor move and move the field of view first. Games like rust and ark are games where you want to see what is going on while doing other stuff.

you can do that, by marking the rust as always visible. then switch to other workspace and use your stuff from other monitor while rust is always visible on every workspace on the other monitor :)

I Would say performance is really great, pretty much maxed out 1440p and constantly 60+ fps without any big drops, i call it a success... ofc if you have a bit lower end hardware you probably need to drop down some graphical settings.

Who needs PVP when you have bears!

Can we have such agreement here?
I mean yes, bears, ninja boars, damn dogs, cold, choppers and radiation aren't enough?
Defending your territory or even raiding for valuable loot is one thing, but I've been killed few times outside anyone's territory while having nothing else on me other than my naked ass (and maybe a pumpkin). It must have been a really precious pumpkin probably, but I doubt is worth a bullet.

About performance, from what I see the game needs copious amount of VRAM. I have only 3 GB of it and my card can deal with higher settings as long as I stay within these 3 GB.
I'd be curious to know from someone with more VRAM how much the game actually needs to be happy.

The bears have taken so much from me! Makes me sad...
I cannot guarantee I won't kill you as I shoot first because I am afraid to get shot. If you complain in chat though, then I probably will come back with your things.

You will pay for shooting me last night ;)
