Following on from the hints about Dark Forces getting the Linux version on Steam, it seems like STAR WARS: Rebel Assault I + II will also see their DOSBox wrapped versions have Linux support on Steam.

Going by SteamDB again, this popped up which makes it seem like it's finally going to be put on Steam for us.

I should note, that again it will likely be the same thing GOG already has (including a Linux build). Still, it's good that people who tend to stick with Steam will no longer miss out on some classics.

The first game was originally released in 1993, as LucasArts first CD-only game, so it has a bit of a special place in history for them.

No clue when the Linux builds will be put up, but hopefully not too long. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

It's wonderful for them to provide these old classics truly available. We don't miss too many classic SW titles no more! Episode I: Racer would be nice...

Whether it's Dosbox on Linux or Dosbox in Windows, where's the difference? If the DOS-Version is available you can play it anywhere DOSbox is available. I wish GOG would just label DOS as platform and provide it at most with a sane config instead of installers and whatnot.

The only real difference I guess is that now you can just click 'Install' on Steam / Gog, instead of having to muck around with config files. I wish we'd get a proper port of the Windows versions of X-Wing, since they have slightly nicer graphics.

Have you heard of XWVM? Its a new Unity based engine for the original X-Wing Simulator game. They've mentioned they intend to support Linux. I've been meaning to poke GOL to do a post on it.

I did just click install with gog installer... and when it run (Constructor), it crashed my PC. I still had to muck around with config files to make it run properly. So no, I don't see the benefit. Especially when most games run with default dosbox setting anyway and that seems to be what GoG provides.

Awesome! There are several 'engines' for older games I'd love to see finished with a Linux version, like DarkXL (which supports Dark Forces and I think eventually they intended to support Daggerfal.)

Updating to Unity is fantastic though.
