Brawl of Ages [Steam, Official Site], a pretty good fast-paced strategy game has been through a pretty big change lately. Now, all cards are free and available immediately.
It's a pretty huge change, which could help the game gain a bigger following. Having cards behind some sort of level grind will always mean a higher level player could have a chance to destroy someone who doesn't have as much time. This levels out the playing field somewhat, which is nice.
Instead of earning cards, you will now earn cosmetic items. These items can be purchased, sold and traded directly within Steam using the Steam Marketplace. This is another thing that could give the game a player-base boost, it will be interesting to see if it helps.
They have also added in $2 purchases in-game, which will give you random cosmetic items. The kind of in-game purchases that I really don't mind at all.
I like all these changes, since any purchases are cosmetic only and winning games is now purely down to your skill and luck in what cards you get and when you get to play them. This makes the game fully play to win, not to grind or pay to win — nice!

So this is what happened to Strife. Sigh...

Smart move IMHO. Brawl of Ages was unlikely to be able to compete with Clash Royale if it used the same type of microtransaction model, since Clash got there and took that market so much sooner, but it might be able to gain traction now since the biggest complaint about Clash lately tends to be the money you need to invest in it to really be able to compete, especially at high levels. An alternative to Clash that doesn't require you to sink hundreds of dollars into it to compete at high levels might just lure some of that market.
