A fresh release of OpenMW, the open source game engine to play Morrowind has been released. There's not a huge amount of new features, but there's a lot of fixes.
Note: It's only a game engine, so it does require the original game. You can get a copy of Morrowind DRM free on GOG. It's perfectly acceptable to buy an old Windows title to run in an open source engine!

The main thing about this release is the staggering amount of bug fixes and general improvements, to make the game a better experience. I've heard it was already playable until the end, but having it as smooth and bug free as possible is also important.

I really hope once this is considered truly complete, that they can move onto Oblivion too, that would be even more awesome.

- Implemented water sound effects
- Implemented light particles showing in inventory character preview
- Implemented magic projectiles emitting light
- Implemented NiSphericalCollider

Nice to hear.

Yeah.
There's no other Bethesda game that needs more a modern version than Oblivion.
Has many bugs and incompatibilities with modern machines/OS'es.

Oblivion runs more or less on the same engine, with a bunch of strap-ons.
They wouldn't be starting from scratch.

Hmm , ok , then we might be seeing it as well . That would be cool.
Also , is "strap-ons" a correct term ? All that comes to mind is the sex toy....

My bad. The few ones I used worked without flaw so did not dig into overall status.

A lot of support for Oblivion has already been experimented with, there's information here: OpenMW Oblivion experiments Officially the developers will not be merging any Oblivion code until after 1.0 is out. Anyone can of course fork and work on Oblivion support in the mean time. From what I gather the main issues are: SpeedTree support, Support for facial customisation/animation, and support for extended shaders which Morrowind didn't have. The archive format for Oblivion also needs to be implemented as well as any updates to scripting/AI code.
