Realms of Arkania: Star Trail [Steam], a hardcore RPG with turn-based combat that serves as a remake of Realms of Arkania’s classic sequel.
The game released on Steam back in 2013 with Linux support, but it just released left Early Access as a finished game. I'll be honest, I forgot about this one completely. I don't remember anyone even mentioning it since the original EA release. It doesn't have too many reviews yet either, with multiple reviews claiming it still feels unfinished — ouch.

Good Game! But this trailer is horrible. If I wouldn't know the "original" Game then I wouldn't buy it.

It's a nice remake. Yet, while I can't name any real reason, I still prefer the original DOS game (which btw. is available at GoG and runs pretty well in DOSBox).

I played one of the Realms of Arkania games back in the day (Shadows over Riva) and I liked it very much. I got the Blade of Destiny remake off Steam a few years back and it was a horrible, broken mess, looking terrible and running at sub-20 fps on my rig. I hope this one's better.

I'm ok with retro graphics, but this just looks cheap :o .
I played both Blade of Destiny and the original Star Trail. Oh, character creation, they don't make things this way anymore (unless it's a RoA remake ;) ). I was a fan to the extent that I was learning German by reading "Und Altaia brannte" - a novel set in the Schwarze Auge setting.
So, after a thought, I might actually buy it :)
Oh, and Bambaladam FTW.

The original trilogy is also available on Steam with Linux support, on GOG, even being a DOSBox game as you say, only Windows and Mac are officially available.

Never played, or even heard of, the original series. What is a "hardcore rpg?" What sort of games would you compare it to? The trailer doesn't give much indication of what the game really is.

Your party will get horribly massacred if you have a poor composition or are underleveled. At low level you will need to save scum since your characters will die A LOT and they don't just magically recover after a battle, you need to take them to the temple of their deity to bring them back and it's expensive. Just a very unforgiving game that can take a lot of time and trial and error to figure out what works and what doesn't and which skills are worth investing in and which aren't. These days, you can always look up a guide. Back in 1992 the Internet wasn't really a thing yet, at least not what it is today, so you couldn't really look up a guide online back then, you had to figure it out on your own.
I forget if the original games had automapping or if I had to break out the trusty graph paper...
