Ryan "Icculus" Gordon [Official Site, Twitter], the man responsible for maintaining many development tools like SDL 2 and who ported many games to Linux, is looking for new games to port. The fun thing is, he doesn't require payment since he's funded by his Patreon.

He's had contracts with Valve, Epic Games, Activision, Google, Crytek and plenty more. He has a lot of awesome work under his belt!

From his new post:
Quote[…]If there's a developer that you think would be interested in getting a Linux port done by a guy that they don't have to pay, let me know. Hell, let them know about me! Let's see if we can get some conversations going with some developers that are sitting on the fence!

This is a pretty interesting way to get Linux ports done. Ryan has hit over $750 a month on Patreon now, so any ports he does as a result of this directly, will be funded by his Patreon, not the original game developer.

I've seen the discussion of crowdfunding Linux ports come up here and there, but this is one of the times that it might work. So, if you know any, send the developer to him and we may see more Linux games get ported as a result.

Will be very fun to see what comes out of this. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Well, considering the criteria of an "interested developer" and the fact that it might be nice with a game that would not require a huge time-consuming effort to port. Bethesda & Rockstar can probably be considered "out of the picture". So, a few titles that I´m thinking about:

"Endless Legend & Endless Space". Both games are supposed to be good and the developers initially planned linux versions before they felt they had to re-prioritize.

"Grim Dawn". Diablo/Viktor Vran-like game that is sopposed to be great. As far as I recall the developer said that a linux version was possible at some future date.

"The Age of Decadence". Indie rpg with good reviews. A linux version has been on the table but the developer claims linux-support in the game engine has not been completed.

"Underrail". Another small rpg with good reviews, that should have the needed XNA to FNA support for a linux port but the developer does not seem too interested.

"The Technomancer" Another spiders game "Bound by Flame" has already been ported to linux so there might be some support there.

"Outcast 1.1" This was promised to be ported to linux but then...nothing happened.

"Kathy Rain" and "Technobablylon". Two adventure games with good reviews both were supposed to be ported to linux but for differing reasons the porting seems to have stalled indefinitely.

Well, these are a few suggestions of titles that *might* be portable without too much trouble of a technical nature or in negotiating with the developers.

"Another fighting game would be great. He could either port Street Fighter 5 (which was supposed to come out for Linux a long time ago) or Guilty Gear Xrd Rev2 (works quite well with Wine and uses OpenGL so it shouldn't be too hard) or KOF XIV which uses SDL already. "
sdl?
input is not a big deal, it will save a few bytes during the porting process only

Forgetting about the games for a moment, lets take a second to reflect how great it is that the community is funding Ryan to work on useful stuff that benefits us all (Linux gamers) directly. A good example is the fact Ryan has been able to work on https://icculus.org/physfs/ full time for the last month or so because of patreon funders.

I got more interested in the patreon model a few weeks back when I read these articles [1] [2]. Consequently I went looking for people I though worth funding, heres what I found:

I'm sure I missed some, if you know of other interesting people or projects in the open source gaming space please post them in the comments.

godot? blender?
and its not software but the copyleft pepper and carrot comic, made with open source software. (fund an case of sucess sometimes is better than the product itself)

For me it would be a dream to see ported on day 1 Project Cars 2.
What I'd like to see fixed is Ark Survival Evolved
What I'd like to see ported is Dayz and (so I don't need anymore to keep Steam on wine) No Man's Sky.

PS. To Ryan: You made miracles with UT port, a dream became true! And I know you don't want to hear about it, but for me it's like you also ported UT3! Loki Software lives!!!

It's funny how this changed into another request thread. There was a request for developers that may want his services or for people to steer developers into his direction. All game requests here are completely pointless.

what about castle crashers? its a great indie game.
or (its veeery unlikely) eternal daughter (from the same designer of aquaria and Spelunky)

But actually, this must be what mansplaining feels like to women.
What's that when it's at home?

I think that AAA games may be difficult to port for one man (A Borderland 1 port would be so cool). I have to finish a lot of games, but i would like to see :

-Shadow Warrior 2 (Road Hog Engine)
-Legend of Grimrock 2
-Killing floor 2 (Unreal engine)

I believe Linux ports were promised for these 3 games, but never released.

No man sky would be cool aswell.

Maybe you could have a look at Planet Nomads. (HB store

I was going to say you're preaching to the choir... But actually, this must be what mansplaining feels like to women.
Urgh....
"Urban talk" on a Linux website :O
Mansplaining is just an admittedly annoying term for a very common type of condescension, and condescension isn't nice, be it for sexist reasons or otherwise. It always implies the assumption your audience is less intelligent/informed than you. But what's "urban talk". Never heard the term before. Is there also "rural talk"?

For me: Batman series, Witcher 3 and last but not least Quake Champions.
Whitewolfe80 Aug 22, 2017
Warhammer: Space Marine Sega/Relic

Rise of Tomb Raider Crystal Dynamics

Witcher 3 (CDPROKJECT)

Just Cause 3

Mafia 3

Darksiders 1 and 2

any of these would be fantastic

Something off topic but interesting...

Icculus did ports for Activition and EA. Read here > Icculus homepage.
Some Call of Duty series "Server" and Medal of Honor series "Server" for Linux. But he was not contracted to do the Client ports.

No wonder! Windows would not be able to work out the load compared to Linux:D
As always... Linux makes the job but is not allowed/worth it to play:(

Based on the content of Icculus' résumé and sensible suggestions of suitable games, i.e. not Bethesda/Blizzard/Rockstar who I'd consider as large and non-Linux-friendly publishers, here are some more recommendations:

Shadow Warrior 2 (these guys promised Linux release, and haven't delivered yet)
Elite Dangerous
Subnautica
Legend of Grimrock 2
Killing Floor 2 (noting that Icculus did the port of 'Killing Floor' )
Inside (noting that Icculus did the port of 'Limbo' )
PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds (noting that Icculus did the port of 'Rocket League' - different company, but similar league of game and incredibly popular)
NieR Automata
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
Banished
Astroneer
Divinity: Original Sin 2

Most of those I'd get myself, if they "landed" on Linux.

Grim Dawn would be a great option. It works in wine now I believe, but it was flaky for a long time.

I wasn't aware of Kathy Rain. Looks interesting! Technobabylon I really enjoyed. It works with the Linux version of AGS, so it's a shame it didn't get official support.

I second Darksiders, they are already partially done. They were being worked on by one person as well. The company has shown an interest in porting them already.

ok, guys, don't take this the wrong way but most suggestions here are pretty ridiculous. I know we all might have one or a couple of AAA games in our wishlist, but let's think things over, this is a guy earning 750$ a month that won't see a nickle from sales, undertaking a titanic project that'd normally have a team dedicated to it (and still might have some problems at the end), we are virtually talking about slavery, this beside the fact that AAA games have the resources to pay someone to port their games, you can't just fix a lack of will.

It's clear this is meant for AA and indie games(preferably already fully released with no updates piped), one good suggestion I saw here was hat in time as (according to said poster)they were already trying to make the linux port and were having trouble with it.

we do but Hitman was authorised by Io interactive not Square apparently as they said just after they went indie they were open to supporting linux going forward.

I feel like it would make more sense to go for porting the major game engines as opposed to one off games. Imagine if unreal engine had Linux support. It would be insane and we could recycle a bunch of code.

Uhm... Unreal Engine does have Linux support. In fact it's had Linux support since Unreal Tournament. Doesn't mean all the companies making Unreal Engine games want to support Linux. In fact Unreal Engine 4 now has a 'compile for Linux' option, last I heard, much like Unity.

I got a bunch of unreal engine books off of humble bundle, and maybe in the year 2030 when I have some time, I'll build a game out of it... :P

I would love to see Killing Floor 2 come to Linux.
