Sad news here, as it seems Killing Floor 2 is not coming to Linux any time soon, despite previous rumours about it.

Back in February I reported on Knockout Games doing the port, as it was listed on their site and they confirmed it in a Tweet that was later removed.

However, earlier this month the developer posted this on Steam:

It is not something actively in development at this time, but our engine team continues to evaluate it as a potential task weighed against the rest of their workload.

It's a shame really, since Tripwire announced Killing Floor 2 back in 2014 with SteamOS support. They also told me they would be doing the Linux/SteamOS version themselves. Priorities change of course, but it's still a shame.

I'm guessing something didn't work out with the port Knockout Games was supposedly doing, so hopefully someone else (perhaps Icculus?) can do it, or they can do it themselves in future as originally planned.

Thanks for the tip, spidernet.

Glad I was sitting down when I read this... not. Like h54, I'd long removed it from my wishlist.

It's also extremely disingenuous of them to restrict their Steam forum posts to only those people who have bought the game. I lost faith in Tripwire when they did that, also locking various Linux threads after announcing that their one and only Linux engineer had moved on, but it was "still in their plans". No, it's really not.

Loved Killing Floor 1 as well. Probably about 125 hours in Windows, and then the same again in Linux - it's my second top played game of all time. To be cut off from the sequel hurts, even if it does get terrible reviews for all the micro transactions they introduced. After all, it's not like KF1 didn't have them either - Tripwire love their DLC-hell. I would still have bought KF2 if they'd followed through on their 2014 announcement promises.

But tux first, then bucks.

Well I just saved myself £20 & removed it from my wishlist.

The official Tripwire cross-platform porting process™:
  • Identify need for Linux machines to build on
  • Begin Ubuntu installation process
  • Something goes wrong
  • Give up forever

Aww, too bad. We could now ask Aaron if he is not working on KF2 anymore. Maybe he is allowed to answer that.

At least it runs great in Wine with 'dx10' option

Same. It's a shame, though, as I enjoyed the first one and was looking forward to playing it. Hopefully it will find its way to our platform.

If you don't buy it within the next 4 days, you're only saving $12, because it's in the current Humble Monthly Bundle ;)

Sad to hear this.
Didn;t they promise it in a kickstarter or something ?

I played KF2 a bit on windows but it was not very fun.
You had less control over maps , could not do a local server , the game would match make you versus VERY powerful players who had better stats and killed all the monsters before you could.

First one is still great in my opinion.

KF2 is a UE 3 Game.

I'm as disappointed as you all, but KF1 was cross platform and it's a fantastic game, so it's a shame, but I don't hold ill will against Tripwire. Like Liam said, things change - they still gave us one great game

As far as I know all UE engines have linux support. The first engine even had glide support next to opengl. And the glide support (or glide itself) was superior to opengl.

I use Linux only, no Windows. Here's my money.... want it?
