Massive respect to the developers of Darkwood [Official Site, Steam, GOG]! They've released a news post about how things have gone for them and inside is a link to an imgur post, containing a little story and a free torrent if you can't afford the game right now.
Here's what they said
Steam lets you refund a game if you haven't played it for more than 2 hours, and as a developer we can see the reason why people refunded it. When we read the explanation from someone who wrote that he needed the refund because he didn't want his parents to be stressed out when seeing the bill at the end of the month... well, it made us feel quite bad.
So we decided to do something about it! If you don't have the money and want to play the game, we have a safe torrent on the Pirate Bay of the latest version of Darkwood (1.0 hotfix 3), completely DRM-free. There's no catch, no added pirate hats for characters or anything like that. We have just one request: if you like Darkwood and want us to continue making games, consider buying it in the future, maybe on a sale, through Steam, GOG or Humble Store. But please, please, don't buy it through any key reselling site. By doing that, you're just feeding the cancer that is leeching off this industry.
Here's the torrent link. However, it's only for the Windows version currently. If you do use that (dual booting?), I urge you to support the developer with a purchase in future, they seem worthy of the support.
Quoting: TheRiddickHalf the YT gamers support G2A and embed ads to them, the other half think their the spawn of Satan. Honestly you can't win, I will use G2A if I miss a special on something, and from what I have seen most games are fine on G2A its just a few developers that get hit with credit-card fraud and charge backs.
IMO those keys should be forcibly invalidated and then G2A will need to provide a new key, this is doable if you pay via paypal because there are big repercussions if they don't deal with it correctly.
I would guess that deep inside you know that you are not doing the right thing here.
I can't blame the studio's if they are turning their back on Linux if the market is already that small but people are still feeling the need to use questionable sites just to safe a few bucks. Greed is sad :(
PS: But thanks for being honest and letting this discussion happen in the first place.

Instead I'm going to buy it today, full price.
I prefer to use anonymous pre-paid cards for my games purchases, even if there's no need to. That's why I haven't bought it yet. I have to run to a store first.
Regarding g2a, this is one of the videos TotalBiscuit made about it. There were some more before/after that one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cac0ACHux-Q
QuoteIt is set in an isolated forest somewhere in the Soviet Bloc, where the main characters have been trapped for an unknown amount of time.
sounds interesting. Any chance for a linux torrent? I would like to try that game out first. Demos are something that I truly miss these days :/
Quoting: chancho_zombieDevelopers like to point the finger on users. But this is actually a steam problem, steam is suppose to by the solution for the middle-man problem. If there is something I learned from reading the linux kernel mailing list, is that you never take it on users.
How...how is this a Steam problem? The devs set the price, not Valve.
Quoting: tomaszgThe torrent seems to be Windows only :(Dangnabbit!
Waited all day to download torrent (Australian crappy copper network - thanks Turnbull ya c**t!) and turns out to be not native Linux version! :><:
Also thanks for the tip @tomaszg - got it working on Wine (it "just" worked!)...
Quoting: chancho_zombieafter trying with a second visa debit card, over steam, it finally worked!! you are right @Comandante Ñoñardo, debit cards work!! but not all of them.
Since you mention Paypal, have you considered buying steam wallet codes directly from them? I don't think there's any mark up and it was a great way to give my kids wallet money when they're too young for credit cards.

(Just realised that this looks like phishing, because of the domain. However, you can see the link is endorsed from Paypal themselves here: https://www.paypal.com/us/selfhelp/article/how-do-i-buy-and-send-a-digital-gift-card-through-paypal-faq3432

But he wasn't talking about the price, I thought? I understood him to be referring to Steam's lack of support for his credit card.
What about a "pay what you want strategy"? I'm sure Steam could accommodate that, if not, at least, why not put it up on GOG.com. Why a torrent site?
Quoting: appetrosyanMassive respect, but also, there has to be another way.

Pretty sure the people they're targeting with this would probably be on those torrent sites to get a cracked copy. This is a useful, pain-free method of addressing the issue. Well, apart from the fact that the UK blocks torrent sites, I suppose. VPNs for the win.
I actually bought this long ago while it was in Early Access. Sadly they don't natively support the Steam Controller, but at least some of the community have already created a mapping that works well under Linux, and it's not a case of broken controller support like 12 is better than 6, or Hero Siege.
Quoting: chancho_zombieAnd let's not make only about me why do you think g2a is so popular here and in other countries?? Because the school boys/girls that play gta V or overwatch (that don't have a debit/credit card) can pay their games on cash.Another option in Argentina is using Ripio, you can charge your wallet in ARS and buy on Steam with Bitcoins.

Quoting: maxRunnerI think it's refreshing. Look the game is going to be torrented anyway (probably already was).
There are both Windows and Linux cracks out there from the usual suspects.
I wonder where Liam stands on downloading the cracked Linux version vs. downloading the officially free Windows version? ;-)
For the record, I have paid for my Linux copy!
The game is actually scary/tense. I didn't believe it when I read it. There are some jump scares in there, but for the most part it's the atmosphere. I still have next to no clue what is actually going on story-wise. I'm positively surprised by Darkwood.
See more from me
