Vikings - Wolves of Midgard [Steam] suffered a small delay in the Linux version, but this hack and slash RPG is now officially available for Linux.

Note: GOG doesn't currently have the Linux version, only Steam right now.

We've had to wait a couple months for the Linux version, but I'm pleased to see it released so that we don't have to chase them down for information. Kalypso Media are proving again they're a pretty good publisher of Linux games, which makes me happy.

The game has mixed reviews overall, however, I will reserve my own thoughts until I can play it. I've now put in a key request, so hopefully we will be able to cover it properly soon.

About the game
QuoteThe Action RPG Vikings – Wolves of Midgard takes you to the Shores of Midgard, a world based upon the mythology and history of the Vikings, but with a fantasy twist. Battle the fearsome Jotan, hordes of terrifying undead monstrosities and the beasts of Ragnarok, as you strive to survive the growing cold that threatens to end all life, forever. Master mighty weapons, including sword and shield, two-handed hammers, dual-wielded axes and swift bows. Earn blood in battle to offer in tribute to the Gods in order to acquire and enhance devastating Spell Powers and other special unlockables.

The game just went on sale for a whole week on Steam, -50% is damn good deal on this game. And since they now support Linux, I am all in here.

Quoting: DamonLinuxPLGame look very nice but this reviews... I found few opinions. One is about poor performande, dude with i7 6800k 4,5 GHz with GTX1080 on Windows have only 60-70 FPS and on little worse hardware FPS droping even below 30 FPS... So I need to know what this game performing on Linux. Next opinion is about boring locations and gameplay. Next is about price. 44,99€ is too expensive for this games from few reviews I see that this game should cost about half this price, maybe 19€ and all should be fine but for 45€? Too much.

I could play it at a capped 60 fps without any problems on the highest settings. I turned the cap off for about a minute and got over 100 fps.

Hmm. So look like Linux port is good optimized.

Thanks for info.

I'll have to give it a shot on my G-Sync monitors!

It's been working fine for me too so far (FX-8370, GTX 1070), at least during the first mission (I've not played more yet). Stable capped 60 fps at 1080p, ~45 at 3840x2160 but that's... normal for me

I'm really liking this game. The environment working against you is a bit of a new flavor, only really have seen that in a deeper RPG like Divine Divinity: Original Sin. About the only thing I find odd is the collection of the hearts so you can blood sacrifice and gain levels. Though I played an archer, so maybe it was a bit more annoying to have to run and fetch them after slaying things.

On Fedora 25 I get C2D right after first loading bar.

That is maybe because a library requires a fairly new glibc, SteamOS has the same problem.

There is a workaround posted here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/404590/discussions/0/2183537632741033088/?ctp=2#c1473096599329594650

Try to move the file ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Vikings - Wolves of Midgard/vikings_Data/Plugins/x86_64/libVpxVideoPlugin.so into a backup folder

Interesting, it does play fine on my Debian Sid box.

There is a sale right now! Is the game worth it? The reviews are mixed: Good and bad ones are almost even. Usually this is a bad sign.

if you like playing just single player portion of hack 'n slash action RPGs then this game is fun. there is some performance issues. but on my system, it was minimal. it looks great and works really well. they have recently fixed many small bugs that were in the game. on Linux it works really well. it's a unique twist on Viking mythology. it is loosely based, but well enough as you can tell they must have really enjoyed watching Vikings the tv series, because there are some tidbits of influence there.

overall it's a decent story, but it is a bit of a grind for crafting gear at the parts where you need to upgrade your buildings to continue on. just don't grind to much, because when you hit new game+ all of your materials reset. which I feel was totally unnecessary, and a bit of a kick in the balls so to speak. maybe they will tweak this in a later patch (hopefully).

for a single run threw it is a really fun game and worth it while it's on sale, if you really get into the grind of hack 'n slash games like Diablo for the late game, then this will be a good investment, because it seems the devs are still working to improve this game.

You can play it local co-op. Seems a bit easy though, may need to up the difficulty.

Hmm I may need to pick this game up. How's controller support? It says it supports it but how is it really?

I saw a german review where they said it's more fun playing it with a controller - but mouse and keyboard works as well. I'm note sure if this is true for Linux also but I think it's a good indicator the game is also developed around controller. Since I did not buy / play it yet I can't say for sure.

The steamcontroller works good out of the box without having to change settings for it for me

the K&M works fantastic in this game, there's even some tweaks they did with having a larger attack radius around the mouse cursor, compared to every other hack'n slash in the past. you can literally click and hold your left mouse button throughout the entire map and whatever comes close to your cursor your character will attack. right click is to roll/dodge or spacebar.

I picked up Vikings last night. What a deal for 14$usd.. Can't wait to play it.
