Good news for developers, as SDL [Official Site] 2.0.6 now has support for Vulkan firmly locked into place for the next release.

SDL 2.0.6 will have Vulkan support! You can make a Vulkan-compatible window and let SDL handle the platform-specific pieces of your setup. https://t.co/IJ6BrIndA5

You can see the actual commit here. With the actual work behind this being done by Jacob Lifshay and Mark Callow.

Since this is the first initial support of Vulkan in SDL, it may still have some rough edges to be worked out as new implementations always do. The games and applications using it need to support Vulkan themselves of course, since SDL isn't going to make an OpenGL app suddenly use Vulkan. I hope this might help Vulkan adoption more in future though, since it's one less hurdle for developers to jump over.

Well, indirect it is. Targeting Vulkan alone can now be enough to support all three platforms and therefore increasing the chance of Linux support :P

That's only a possibility. Same as a developer going with OpenGL, it makes one part of the puzzle possibly easier for a developer, but it doesn't mean ports will happen. Same with MoltenVK, developers actually have to go and make use of it, I haven't yet heard of any game developers even looking into it, especially since MoltenVK has a cost attached to it.

I don’t really believe MoltenVk is going to actually make Vulkan popular choice for macOS versions… but the Vulkan Portability Initiative might (and perhaps on top of what it achieves somebody makes an open-source full implementation of Vulkan on Metal in the future). Then, with the ability to easily create a Vulkan window and handle events using SDL, it might make it really reasonable to write one works-everywhere Vulkan version of a game. :)

Not really that relevant considering Vulkan support isn't official on Mac and won't be until Apple budges.

It would be cool if they port SDL for the Switch. The Switch runs OpenGL and Vulkan, and adding a support to a console would increase the use of SDL and Vulkan
