I will be honest, I think when Overload [Steam, Official Site] is finished it might end up being the absolute best six-degree-of-freedom shooter on Linux. Let's take a look at the latest update!
Version 0.6 (Build 67) adds in a new challenge mode level named 'Blizzard', this new level features a new level feature called Accelerator Tunnels, so I took a look:
As you can tell, the Ace difficulty level is really quite challenging. The varied enemy types are really interesting, especially the robots that dive at you, really freaks me out at times when I'm not expecting it.
It also features a new robot called a Reaver, a Time Bomb missile, the ability for a player to Cloak and tons of bug fixes.
Check out the full changelog here.
I think even at this early stage of development, it's well worth taking a look if these types of shooters are usually your thing. It's extremely well polished, it looks absolutely gorgeous and it feels damn good too. The fact that they plan to add in multiplayer as a free update after the full release, makes me happy too.

I always loved the Descent series ever since I had discovered Descent 1 in the SUSE Linux 10.0 package manager ;) Descent 3 is still a little active by the way (there are still LAN parties every year in Germany), but players keep disappearing which is why we need Overload more than ever to revive the community!

I really liked the new blizzard level. It's so much fun and flying through those accelerators gives both a speed thrill and it also brings a new depth of complexity to the game. I once managed to chased down a robot who was trying to hide from me by taking the shortcut through the accelerator and by coming out just beside the bot took it by complete surprise.
The time bomb was super cool as well. The new features almost makes the Overload a 7- or 8-degree-of-freedom. Getting updates like this every month or so keeps the game alive. Even though the game does not contain a full campaign right now and if it was released today I would still consider it as a full game just from the challenge levels. That's how good the implementation is.

I guarantee that Overload will easily be the best one. It's being made by the original creators of Descent 1 and 2.
