Artifact, a new card game based on the Dota 2 universe has been announced by Valve as the latest kick in the balls for everyone waiting on Half-Life 3.

Here's the teaser:

We don't know too much about it, other than it being a card game and given that it's Valve it will likely be free to play to ensure it's success. I'm speculating there, since I haven't heard either way, but I would honestly be surprised if Valve made it pay to play. Valve have a huge user base to tap into, so free to play for them is pretty smart considering even small in-game purchases could end up netting them a lot of money.

There's no details on platforms yet either, so hopefully Valve don't suddenly forget to include a Linux version. I doubt they would, if they do, it really would make me question their plans for SteamOS & Linux.

Brad Muir who worked on titles like Brütal Legend and Massive Chalice announced on Twitter that he's been working on for a while:

I've been working on @PlayArtifact at Valve for a while now! Can't wait for you guys to play it! :D!

There's a new official Twitter account for the game, if you want to keep up with the latest on it. I will be following it closely to get more details when they come for you.

What do you think?

Quoting: PhiladelphusWell, given how popular Dota and CCGs are I'm sure this'll make lots of people very happy.

Yes and all of them work at Valve, this will be a cash cow. F2P and with micro transactions, that's the only thing you can count on from valve. I highly doubt we will ever see a solid game from Valve ever again, they make way too much money with F2P games.

And I don't get why people still expect Valve to be able to make a uniqe IP again. The only IP Valve ever created was Half-Life, every other IPs Valve brought up where bought in. Even Portal is a bought IP.

To be honest, I'd rather have a really big sequel to the left4dead series than half-life. Yes I'm serious.
L4d has more potential in it, and is a fantastic coop game. While At this point it's impossible to make a Hl3 that would not disappoint. The myth must remain forever.

I kind of echo the sentiment of other people
Card games are a thing now , Hearthstone , Gwent and now Artifact. Easy to learn ,hard to master, free to play but with incentive to throw all your money at them. Corporations go where profit is after all.
Would be nice if they are accessible to non-big spenders but power creep has a tendency to invalidate that.

I wanted to make a comment that they'll do a goofy, team-based shooter like everyone else, then again they kinda started the fad with TF2.
Then I wanted to make a comment about making a MOBA like everyone else, then I reminded myself they already made Dota 2.
Then there's also a loot based MP shooter fad, but CS:GO fits into that.
Obviously, there's also a zombie game.

Mark my words, HL3 will be either a theme-park WoW-like MMO or a Battle Royale type survival game, with everything else dead or dying those are the only fads left (that I can think of).

I was actually half-interested, until I saw it's a computer card game, not a real physical card game. :P

I admit that if I was a Windows user or used Wine to play most of my games I would most likely have the reaction we saw at the live reveal. However, as I mostly play native or ported games I'm excited assuming it comes to Linux as we don't have a good CCG for Linux that is officially supported and so far I've had an experience with Valve's Linux titles.
