The Groups system on Steam has been left to rot a little, but Valve have finally decided to update it. This also removes the ability for spammers to spam group invites out, something I complained about only recently.
From now, only your friends can invite you to groups. This basically stops spammers in their tracks and as someone who got a fair amount of them, I really welcome this decision. They said it themselves "When we first created the Steam Community groups, the community itself was a smaller and simpler place.", but now Steam is just insanely big.
They've also created a new type of group, a "Restricted group" where people have to request access to join it. Seems like a decent idea, so you can double check a request instead of letting anyone join or being invite-only. A nice middle ground for group permissions.
They say they're now moving to deal with all the groups that have been created by spammers, which could take them a while...

I had only few invites, so it didn't disturb me, but of course, when you're more "visible" as a user, I understand it might be a pain... somewhere.

Nice!
Next up prevent spam friend requests. I get so many requests from random windows users it's not funny. Who wants windows users as friends? Not me!

Obviously, friend requests couldn't be restricted to friends only. :D
Maybe (like the feature of Facebook) to friends of friends, or to members of the same group or something.
