This is your once a month reminder to make sure your PC information is correct on your user profiles. A fresh batch of statistics is generated on the 1st of each month.

Note: There is a new question about Wine use this month!

You need to be logged in to see when you last updated your PC info!

You can see the statistics any time on this page.

While we don't currently have a drop-off implemented for old/stale data, it will be coming eventually once I'm sure the system for doing it works smoothly. If you want to make sure you're included at any time clicking update without any changes will update the last time you edited them.

The drop-off for old data will be done in months, since people aren't likely to change hardware that often.

If you can manage, it might be interesting to know how many people use Wine.

Ah yes, that's probably a pretty relevant question to include.

I've now added it in as "Do you use Wine to play Windows games?".

What's the difference between no and never?

No you don't use it and never used it. Maybe I should make that more clear...

I'd suggest sticking to yes/no. It really doesn't say much if one has used Wine at some point. I am sure most people have. Like I have used Windows before, but I don't anymore.
Liam Dawe Sep 25, 2017
True enough, I've changed that to just be a No. Was one I added in haste but didn't really think enough. You're right, using or not using is sufficient.

I want to see a photo of how playing on those 9 monitors looks like.

This is fine. I still feel a bit uncomfortable saying yes when I've only used Wine to play a single older game in the last year. And I've never bought a Windows game for the purpose of playing it using Wine.

I think Wine is great and I don't mind people using it, but I feel like this survey question might not be very indicative of anything as it is.

Hi

I'd like to get "Linux" options added about "Do you dual-boot with a different operating system?"
I have to use "Yes, Other" while I'm using two Linux dual-boot ^_^

Edit : I know a second Linux isn't another OS, still another Distro (for my part) and dual-boot

Maybe another question could be added, something like "Do you buy non-Linux games to play through Wine?".

So, "no" can also means that I have it installed and test it from time to time to make comparations and to see how its improving, but I dont play any game there since I have a windows partition?

That actually is a very interesting question! It led me to an idea. What if we could search for profiles here on GOL and filter by hardware i.e search for let's say, people with the same hardware as you.

This would allow you to find other people with the same or similar hardware as you. Let's say then, that you have a problem on Linux and you know it is probably hardware-related. You would then be able to find other people and ask whether they have/had the same problem as you and whether they fixed it and in that case how.

Of course, you could also ask people how a certain build or piece of hardware works for them on Linux before you decide to buy it yourself.

And at last, you could find the user on GOL who has 9 monitors and politely ask for a picture of that setup :D

EDIT:

As for the WINE question, it could also be a list of ranges of how many games one use WINE for. 0, 1 - 3, 4 - 5, 6 - 8, 9 - ...

It would be a much more useful statistic if you ask:

"How often do you use wine?"
1) In the last month.
2) In the last year.
3) Sometime prior to the last year.
4) Never.

The current yes/no question is impossible to interpret. Otherwise, you need to specify:

"Did you use wine in the last month?" Yes/No

Thanks for the feedback about the Wine question, it is appreciated.

I again agree the adjusted answers still weren't great. The question and answers were still a bit too ambiguous.

I've had a re-think on it and I've adjusted the Wine question to be much more specific. The question is now "When was the last time you used Wine to play a Windows game?" with these options:
  • "In the last month"

  • "In the last three months"

  • "In the last six months"

  • "Over six months ago"

  • "I never use it"

I think that about covers that one, in regards to getting to make sense and be useful.

Additionally, I am also thinking on adding in the question about how many games you play in Wine, as that could be interesting to see too, but that will come later.

I've wiped all previous answers to the Wine question.

+1 to this—this is a much more specific question with a specific bit of data that can be gotten out of it: how many people used WINE in the last month. Otherwise it runs into ambiguous situations like does using WINE a lot two years ago and not touching it since count as "using WINE", or what if I only use it every four months? Etc., etc..

Like, I'm currently using WINE to make a Let's Play of an indie game called Dodge That Anvil! from 2006 which the developer has directly told me can't be updated or ported to Linux due to the technology used to make it (Macromedia Shockwave) being killed off by Adobe, but when I finish with that I have no current plans to continue using WINE. @no_information_here's question would let me update my WINE-using status each month in case things change.

It's too bad Linux from Scratch wasn't on the list. I'm
one of those guys. But I keep Ubuntu around for
game compatibility and tech support.
