New features:

You, Robot: Play Stellaris as a customized robotic civilization, complete a series of robotic portraits for science robots, worker robots, and more.

AI, eh? Aye!: Follow new event chains and story features to lead your robot race to greatness as an intergalactic AI empire; pursue mechanical perfection in the stars.

Rise of the Machines: Oppressed synths may rebel against their masters and form new empires -- or you may even discover a fallen synthetic civilization deep in space.

Digital Enhancements: New synthetic race portraits, and expanded voice packs for VIR.


New Music: Featuring three new tracks from composer Andreas Waldetoft expressing the high-tech theme of the Story Pack.

They're planning to release it on September 21st for $9.99. It doesn't sound like a bad price at all for the content it's providing. It sounds like future runs of Stellaris will be vastly more interesting thanks to this boost of content, especially with the new events.

As usual for Paradox, it should release alongside a free patch named "Čapek". This free patch will make big changes to Democratic Election! No longer will it be a list of all your leaders, instead it will further integrate with the factions system. If a candidate is from a powerful faction, they have a better chance of being elected. They will add in other leaders if you don't have enough from factions too, so it's balanced a bit for games in the early stages.

They've also reworked the sector system a little too in terms of your core sector, instead of having a governer per-planet you now only need one for the whole sector.

If you're overly excited, you can actually pre-order right now. I'm really looking forward to it, after having a rather unsuccessful attempt at galaxy-wide domination in a recent multiplayer game, we will see what I can do with a robotic civilization. Bring it on!

True, there is no amphibian species group, but amphibian and reptile are very similar in appearance and since there is a already a cute species that look like a newt, pretty sure they wouldn't add a cute species that look like one if they added amphibian, would probably be some kind of rain forest frog in that role. =p

Also you will be able to customize syncretic species in 1.8 patch, that come with Synthetic Dawn, so you should be able to start with a War of the Newts like scenario.

It seems to assume that synthetic empires will always be hive minds. But I don't see why that should be the case. Most stories involving sentient robots or AIs don't feature them being hive minds. And I don't see why they should have to be something that somehow went wrong, either. They could have been perfectly ordinary sentient robots, serving or living in harmony with their builders, when said builders got annihilated in some way that didn't kill synthetics as hard as organics--warfare with bioweapons, for instance, or even plain old nuclear war (certainly not good for robots, but lingering fallout, nuclear winter and so on aren't as big a problem for survivors). Or their old bosses could have transcended this plane of existence, given them a handshake and said "good luck!" on the way out.
So you could perfectly well have a civilization full of individual droids a la R. Daneel Olivaw, R2D2 or whatever, which could be anything from democratic to a military dictatorship run by General Grievous.
Meanwhile, if you're going to have a mech hive mind, why all these humanoids? If you're a hive AI, why not just have sentience in all the mechanicals? Not ships with robot crews, just sentient ships and trains and forklifts and factories.

Still cool. I'm just saying some possibilities are being left on the table here.

The reason they are hivemind is because they are sentient robot from pre-FTL society. Collective synthetic empire robot start at lower spec then individualistic synthetic robot pop, which are mid to late game tech, thus the game director consider individualistic sentient robot unfeasible to pre-FTL, as to keep the tech tree coherent.

Also why machine rebellion in FTL empire (which you can side with if you want), are also collective, for why would you give full capability of self-determination to a synthetic being that intentionally kept in a subordinate status, as an uncorrupted individualistic synthetic being would rebel using the same game mechanic then an individualistic biological being, which is actually pretty hard to cause outside of intentionally pissing off the materialist faction, as robot are self-reinforcing toward that faction.
