The Early Access survival game Rust [Steam] has been updated, our server has been updated and we’re now on a fresh map.
Here’s a rundown of what’s new:
- They’ve finally added in smaller “monuments” like the Supermarket & Gas Station, which should make the map a lot more interesting. More places to explore, hide and fight over is good! Here's what they look like:
- Information panels for items, so clicking a weapon for example will give you a readout of rate of fire and damage.
- The default map size has been increased, considering we have more monuments and now the smaller versions, map space would get a bit cramped.
- Also, they upgraded their version of Unity to 2017.1, which finally fixes the issue of having no input in fullscreen on Linux (hooray!).
- There's also been some optimizations, texture updates and so on.
On top of that, they recently added in the Bradley APC a few patches ago which patrols the launch site monument, it’s going to be fun taking it down!
You can see the full changelog of this release here. There’s much more, including work going on behind the scenes that’s worth reading.
Our server details:
Anyone is welcome to join our server and no password is required. We will remove anyone found griefing or harassing people. Raiding is fine and it’s a full PvP server, but use common sense and try to be nice. People do often shoot on sight, so be careful out there!
The server wipes once a month, on the first Thursday of each month (like today), which is mandatory by the Rust developers.
I’ve been really impressed with the Rust developers, it’s probably one of the best PvP focused survival games available.
Lastly, I give you a beautiful shot I just took on our fresh server:
I can play Witcher 3, Dying Light, Deus Ex on max/1440p and they won't require more than 3GB of RAM
This game is asking me 7GB on "beautiful"...
FCK U!
PS: I use a windows manager(Bspwm), not even a DE! ...RIDICULOUS!

I agree that it's way too memory hungry - but who doesn't have 8GB ram or more at this point? If you cannot add more ram to your rig, maybe playing with lower texture quality will be acceptable?

It's Early Access, you do know what that means right?

Dont know, maybe 89% of the Steam users?
However all is not sweetness and light: After installing, the Anti Cheat system was erroring out. I hunted around on Steam forums and found that there is a previous library file which hot-fixes the issue. I went into the Rust Plugin game folder and swapped out the Anti Cheat library .so file. Happily it was working after that.
I'm very impressed with the game, but... There are things about it which I find irritating, having come from playing other similar titles (e.g. Dying Light, 7 Days To Die). I'm not going to mention them all but here's a few that come to mind..
- It gets very very dark at night in Rust, the night lasts for a substantial length of time, and the various light sources give very poor lighting. (The playing during night isn't so great.)
- Prefer how the buildings get constructed in 7D2D, there's more choice and you can fully influence (destroy) the environment.
- It's fairly irritating finding some resources (e.g. stone). I know that you can get to know the resource spawn points over time, but there is rock everywhere and you can only pick up particular clumps of it. At least all the trees drop wood!
- The map only lets you view the immediate area, which means you can get lost pretty easily. (And no zoom.)
- First time I got killed in the game, I'd been playing for a few hours and then 2 people had guns and went after me. Didn't have a chance, but I did manage to run for a while with a couple of hits and bullets whizzing around (i.e. it wasn't an instant death.)
- After about 25 hours of play, base constructed, I've got some kit from air drops (including nice guns), running after the latest air drop. Keeping to cover, keeping my eyes open to other players, zigzagging, with full health and full armour on. Just at the very end when I haven't spotted anyone, and go over to the air-drop. Bam,bam, bam, bam and my guy is lying on the floor unable to do anything. That was over in a second. The guy was in front of me, i.e. he hadn't been trailing me and lining up his sights. No chance to fight back. I would have expected to last at least a few seconds with full health and armour, but no. Just adding, I was running when this happened, i.e. a moving target. I don't mind the fact that I died, I mind the fact that the game is set up to enable such instantaneous kills to someone in armour. (It's a balance thing.)
Quoting: g000h- It gets very very dark at night in Rust, the night lasts for a substantial length of time, and the various light sources give very poor lighting. (The playing during night isn't so great.)Craft yourself a flashlight for your weapon! Or make yourself a mining helmet. Night time is scary, but it's not extremely hard to deal with!

Quoting: g000h- The map only lets you view the immediate area, which means you can get lost pretty easily. (And no zoom.)This is wrong, thank god, haha. You can right click to make the map interactive (zoom, pan and draw). Not the best controls, but the map is much better than what you think!

With proper armour you can take a decent amount of hits unless they headshot you (which has a crunch sound).

Very confused by where you get the 89% from. I might just suck at reading percentages, which is absolutely a possibility, but to what I can see from the steam survey 31,33% has less than 8GB ram!
Meaning close to 70% of all steam users has 8GB or more.
If we ignore the Windows and Mac results you end up with 44,14% of Linux steam users with less than 8GB ram.
I really wonder where you got the 89% from. (I answered myself in the edit)
EDIT:
I went back and reread my own comment and added a few words. Of course I include those who has 8GB ram as that's enough to run the game decently, but I did indeed say "more than 8GB ram", which I'm guessing you took as "Do not include people with 8GB or less". It was meant as "8gb or more", which I've now changed my comment to.
So, I went into the hw survey and checked what the results of my wrongly written comment would be. And, while you are closer you are still incorrect. 74,1% of steam users has less than 8GB ram (excluding 8GB ram too)

Thanks for the comments. I didn't know about the map control, so I'll give that a try.
Yes, I guess the mining hat is the best way to do useful things while it is dark.
Regarding the surprisingly quick death, I was wearing the Riot Helmet and the Metal Chest Plate, and full set of clothing. I don't remember crunching of head shots, so I guess it was body shots. I was at 100 HP and running. The shooter was about 30m away, and at about 2am direction to my running forward. I spotted the shooter before they started firing, started to react, and within one second I was lying on the ground unable to do anything.
Regarding the August 2017 Steam Hardware survey, I have just totalled up the values myself, and sharing here:
8GB system RAM or LESS = 74.07% of the user base
9GB system RAM or MORE = 25.93% of the user base
Another statistic:
4GB system RAM or LESS = 25.08% of the user base
5GB system RAM or MORE = 74.92% of the user base
