Uebergame [Steam, Official Site], a free and open source FPS just had a fresh release with new maps, UI updates and plenty more.

If you're interested in the source code, it's available on GitHub.

New update highlights:

  • New map
  • Added options menu item to switch screenshot image format JPG or PNG
  • A bunch of new art assets related to the pacific them such as roads, textures, rocks etc
  • Improved bot navigation
  • Under water ballistics system (not finished)
  • And more!

I tried it out for a bit and it's pretty darn rough. There's hardly any players, but luckily one or two games seemed to have bots in so I could have a little test.

Sound didn't work at all and it didn't seem to detect any sound device to be able to play. Playing an FPS without any sound does make it rather difficult to judge how the gameplay properly feels, since sound design in an FPS can really make it a hit or miss.

Taking that into account, it still felt rough. People would die and their bodies would float in the air, if one bit was touching the ground. Even so, I did like that it felt a bit slower, as it's not a fast-paced twitch shooter which a lot of open source FPS games tend to be.

There were also rendering glitches, with some big green half-circle that kept appearing in the middle of the screen too. Changing graphical settings to a higher setting did seem to remove that.

It could be interesting in future, but it's got a long way to go. Perhaps it needs an injection of fresh developers to help polish it into a fun experience.

Should be noted that this is a one-man project build on top of the open-source Torque3D engine ( torque3d.org ).

It's a pretty interesting start of a FOSS game, and once all the new rendering features for Torque3D 4.0 are implemented, it should also look quite a lot better.

I just wanted to mention that I myself had no sound problems and no graphical glitches when running the steam version.
