Opus Magnum [Official Site] is themed around alchemy and the transmutation of elements and, judging from the above trailer, is classic Zachtronics. Expect to assemble different types of objects from smaller parts and then spending a fair bit of time trying to figure out how to optimize and tweak solutions until you get it just right. Personally, I tend to get a bit overwhelmed with these games but I have to admit it can be extremely satisfying to finally get everything working just the way you want it to when solving a puzzle.

Features:

  • Design Machines - Design and build machines that carry out alchemical processes using a variety of components.
  • Open-Ended Puzzles - Compete against your friends and the world to build the simplest, fastest, and most compact solutions. Export animated GIFs to show them off.

  • Steam Workshop - Make and share your own puzzles with full Steam Workshop integration and an easy-to-use puzzle editor.
  • Solitaire Minigame - Take a break with Sigmar’s Garden, an original alchemy-based solitaire game.

The game will be launching into Early Access for a brief period of time. It’ll include all of its main features and Zachtronics claims they were tempted to skip Early Access altogether but wished to get feedback on balance and usability before a general launch.

You can grab Opus Magnum on Steam.

History, sci-fi, technology, cooking, writing and playing games are things I enjoy very much. I'm always keen to try different genres of games and discover all the gems out there.

Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.

If you enjoyed one of their games in the past, you can't go wrong with the newer/other ones.

It took me over 50 hours to beat Infinifactory. What beasts of levels the last ones were...
Someone mentioned in the forums that the developers said they didn't do them themselves, which sounds... unfair!
But I'll take on the next game of them one day.

It looks a little bit like spacechem but with better graphic. I really like spacechem, so I'm looking forward to this game.

Intresting. I wonder how much it was based on their first automation game, the browser game "codex of achemical engineering"...

For those interested:

Here's an interview of Zach Barth of Zachtronics by electronics engineers.

Truly fascinating imo.

Typical Zachtronics game. I went to play for an hour. Five hours later .... oops.

The game is fun. Although it feels more like a combination of previous elements than something ground breaking. But I've not quite made it to the brain torture yet. :D
