Good news for fans of strategy games, as Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation is currently being ported to Linux.
We've known for a while it was in their plans, especially with Stardock Entertainment's CEO himself putting up a pinned forum thread on Steam asking for Linux requests.
Now, user Swiftpaw posted on Steam asking about Linux support, to which Stardock CEO replied with:
Vulcan support works.
We are working to port the engine to Linux but there’s no ETA.
That's good news, hopefully we will see it within the next 6 months. It's also still amusing the amount of people that spell Vulkan wrong. Can't be helped though, with a name like that.
I'm especially excited, because large scale strategy games like this are my one true love in the gaming world. To have this on Linux, would be a bit of a dream come true for me.
About the game:
Play as the Post Human Coalition or their eternal foes the Substrate and battle for control of the galaxy. Experience maps of unprecedented size and detail with the unparalleled power of the world’s first native 64-bit RTS engine, Nitrous.
Enjoy the game online with friends in ranked or unranked multiplayer mode or play it by yourself against a powerful non-cheating AI in skirmish or campaign mode. No matter what mode you play, strategy is the key: deciding what technologies to research, where to send your armies, how to manage your economy, and what units to construct are crucial to victory.
Experience a massive-scale real time strategy game where you wage war across worlds with thousands of units. The conflict has escalated, and it’s time to choose a side.
Also, it will be the first real AAA RTS on Linux that I'm aware of. :)
Glancing through my Steam library with the steamos+linux filter applied, I see several Paradox strategy games, several from the Total War series and all three games from the Wargame series.

But that Stardock company is a member of Khronos Group afaik , so at least i was expecting them to write it right but still no luck.
The paradox titles are more round based strategy, aren't they?
They are technically real time but they play a bit like turn based strategy because you will be using pause a lot while micromanaging things.
Hells yeah! ..Except there's no way my machine is going to handle this, look at all the stuff going on. I need to upgrade...
It ran okay for me back when I had Windows and an FX-8350 paired with 16GiB DDR3-1333 and a R9 290X.
Looks like you don't have a dedicated GPU though, so that's going to be an issue.
On a serious note, while I'm not a RTS guy and likely won't get this, it's exciting to see another Vulkan game coming to the penguin library. I look forward to a glorious future where most games use Vulkan, even those without Linux support.
It's also still amusing the amount of people that spell Vulkan wrong. Can't be helped though, with a name like that.
This will never happen to a German, due to Deutsche Gründlichkeit!
... or maybe because "Vulkan" is the German word for, well... a vulcan.
;)
Thanks mate, I see. Actually I'm looking forward to something SCII-like with a huge user base and working ranked quick match ladder games. The paradox titles are more round based strategy, aren't they?

My desire to play this is wrestling with my strong dislike of the CEO of this company. :/ I think in the end a surprise third challenger will enter the arena - my empty wallet. :)
What is the reason for dislike for the CEO?

This is not a good place to get into that since it involves dredging up GamerGate again, and I feel we should spare Liam that. ;)
