Since the weekends are generally our quiet time, as I take them to spend a little time with family I'm asking a question: What have you been playing and what do you think?
I've been spending more time than I was expecting in Rust. It's strange really, as it's a game I previously didn't get along with at all and now I'm quite hooked on it.
Not everyone will agree with me on this, but I actually think Rust is one of the nicest looking games on Linux. Sure, there's a good bunch that are better, but there's been many moments in Rust where I have to completely stop and just take in the view. That's in-between all the moments of absolute panic when someone fires shots at me and I have no idea where they are.
I want to share this image I took recently too, from a little meet up we did on our server:
We ended up having some sort of in-game concert and it was rather amusing. What makes it even more interesting, is that community member woox2k managed to hook up some scripts (available on GitHub) to play custom music files in game with the guitars and it was incredible.
If you want to join us on our Rust server, details of our game servers are here.
Anyway, less of my ramblings, over to you! Tell us what you've been playing in the comments.
Quoting: roothorickI've been spending entirely too much time in Windows... I just love VR too much. Gotta have my fix.
Went to see the new show in TheWaveVR tonight, also beat Thumper, spending time in Rez Infinite and can't get enough of Rec Room's Rise of Jumbotron. All of these are top priority when I finally get Direct3D working in WineOpenVR. Which will be like, 2019, at this rate. I never realized how little I know about graphics APIs until I stumbled down this rabbit hole. As long as I beat the Win7 sunset I'm happy.
I may be a fat over 40s guy, but if you can get Elite: Dangerous working flawlessly in Wine and the Vive, you can do whatever you like to my body, as I will no longer need it (harvest organs or whatever.)
I was proud that I made 1.8 million credits today by accepting a mission that was way too far away to complete... ended up scrapping the mission (which was to deliver data and would have given me 680k). Instead I sold Cartography data for about 100 systems for 1.8 million...time to do that a few more times to upgrade my ship!
Quoting: iiariQuoting: GuestI just can't stop playing Rocket League.
* Speedball 2 (Amiga)
The Rocket League before Rocket League. Addictive as all get out. You're completely convinced you can master it until you can't.
When I first saw Rocket League all I could think of was Ballblazer on the Atari 8bit / 5200. The only real difference is upgrades and you can jump. Fantastic game with fantastic music. In fact even right now I can recall the tune. If you have nkt played this, I recommend getting an emulator and the roms. 3d before it was *cool*
Linux:
Rocket League: Just. Can't. Stop.
Helium Rain: Early access, I just don't have the time to sink into it. It's great though. Super excited about the changes the devs are working on (better economy, and skirmish mode!)
Astrokill: Another EA title. May have my favorite space sim flight model since XW vs TF. It's a near perfect blend of Newtonian and arcade (better than even IWar 2 on that front). Graphics look like a million bucks, especially for a budget title. A shame the missions are a wee thin right now and that it's been in EA since '16 (and that's before multiplayer and other things are done yet). Dev is super responsive and Linux version technically is flawless right now on NVidia. However the game does once done, once this engine gets in the hands of modders (which the dev says will be possible) to do SW or ST or whatever with it, it'll be legendary....
Ravenfield: I should be tired of this, but something keeps pulling me back and sucking me in... There's some glorious chaos in this game. Some new community made maps are great too...
Everspace: After Salivating over it, I can't fully get into it now that it's out. Astrokill kind of spoiled me with that flight model. I can't get back into a more "arcade" shooter...
Wine:
Homeworld Remastered: Trying to figure out why this is so revered. Gave up on it on the PC years ago. The same research like mad, build like mad, and then rush, rush, rush dynamics don't seem to have changed... Bored.
House of the Dying Sun: Some days it works on Wine, some days it doesn't. Some days it works on Wine on machine A, others machine B. Have no idea why. A complete flight sim sleeper that is the best mission based sim since the golden era of XW vs TF and Freespace 2 as far as I'm concerned.
Freespace 2/Diaspora Mod: Diaspora mod nails BSG, but the flight model now really shows its age compared to contemporary space sims like ED, Astrokill, etc.
IWar 2: See Freespace 2 above. Same for this title.
Richard Burns Rally: Astonishingly good rally sim. I actually prefer it to Dirt Rally on Linux, and it's what, like, 10+ years older?
Booting Windows 10:
EA Star Wars Battlefront: Playing to excite myself for the new title. I'm not so sure why this was reviewed so harshly. I think it's an outstanding FPS and space sim. It suffers from being console oriented, and sure it's not as integrated and fluid as the classic 2005 Battlefront 2, but it's so gorgeous it brings tears to your eyes and as close as one can get to feeling like you are in the Star Wars universe.
Allegiance: Why doesn't this 2000 title work with Wine yet or have a Linux version? Wanted to see what I was missing. Not much, it appears, so far...
Void Destroyer: So wish this (and the upcoming sequel) were on Linux. Not sure what I think about it yet. It's either brilliant and I'm just not playing it well or not good at it, or it's really ambitious and poorly implemented. Not sure which yet. Not sure either scenario is fun. The sequel in EA looks better, but not sure I'm going to do it based upon 1 so far...
It's absolutely brilliant but also crashy as fuck unless you pump up ulimit just for the game.
I like my shittalking pacifist hippie leader and idiot massive strongwoman who hits shit with a bat.

Same here, I stream a LP and also plan to finish it this time around. I can't even start the game without increasing ulimit to 4096 for it. After that it's mostly OK. I've had sessions where it worked for 8 hours straight without a hitch and others where it crashed after an hour at the loading screen. Not sure those crashes are ulimit related, but they might be.
Of course I'm still playing Kerbal Space Program regularly, but as I'm now playing the Realistic Progression Zero mod, progress is a lot slower than with stock, and that lowers my motivation a bit.
This weekend I mostly played Tyranny. It was on my pile of shame for far too long. Now that I've finally started playing this game, I regret not doing so sooner. It's an interesting experience playing a character caught in the game's setting. Finally one of those games where one has to consider every dialogue option, and where it's often better not to ask certain questions, however tempting they may seem.
I am waiting for the new fortresscraft release which should have an automation item I need to continue my game.
Funny: fortresscraft evolved and ark survival have always been my main time consumers. In both I play a world that I started in 2015.
In the mean time I did play saints row, but these 2 games demand creativity... building effort. I like that.

Quoting: ArdjeI fear I only play ARK, which looks beautiful again since somebody found out how to fix the missing water asset.

Would you be so nice as to elaborate? I haven't bought ARK (yet), as the ugly water was kind of a show stopper to me. Is the water fixed by a developer's patch, or does one have to fix stuff manually?
This week the third episode will release with day one Linux support!
Quoting: soulsourceRecently I've been playing Dominions 4 (after reading through the non-table part of the manual...) a lot, it's an awesome strategy game.

I played through Wasteland 2 and if I'm not wrong I did have one crash. At most. And what's this ulimit thing? What does it do? I surely didn't touch it.
Quoting: TuxeeQuoting: pedrojmartmI have been playing War THunder. 3 hours every day, sadly it is on opengl and it runs about 30-40 fps minus than on Windows but even like that, i enjoy it. I hope Vulkan get to it really soon.
I'm also a rather frequent WT player (same nick as here), but I can't really complain. It runs flawlessly with all details maxed around 60+fps on 2560x1440 on a GTX1060.
I think it is my processor what make me have that FPS count. I have a GTX 1070 on a 25560x1080 monitor, but i have an old Intel Core i7 870 CPU :/

While they say gaming is mostly GPU bound these daays, I fear that's time for an upgrade... :)

Wasteland 2 suffers from a bug where it opens a lot of files and doesn't close them. The number of files a program can have opoen at a time is usually limited on Linux. These are my defaults:
$ ulimit -Hn
4096
$ ulimit -Sn
1024
I can increase the soft limit up to the hard limit as a user, but no higher:
$ ulimit -Sn 4096
$ ulimit -Sn 5000
ulimit: value exceeds hard limit
If I want to exceed that I need to edit /etc/security/limits.conf as root. Obviously none of that should be necessary to play a game, especially not monkeying around as root and relaxing security related things.
- Shroud of the Avatar - getting close to 3000 hours on that now, still has many issues but I enjoy the people I play with
- Borderlands 2 - doing a co-op play through with a friend, we are up to Tiny Tina's DLC
- Saints Row the Third - been playing co-op with a (different) friend, he's got all the achievements now, I still have three to get
- Divinity: Original Sin - yet another game I'm playing co-op, though we're only about seven hours in
Also spent some time on Silence, Pale Spectrum - Part Two of the Book of Gray Magic and Figment in the last few weeks but only around an hour in each. Got my Kickstarter reward for Thaumistry: In Charm's Way yesterday so hopefully be playing some of that this week, but I have a backlog a mile long.
Quoting: OrkultusBeen playing tons of Shroud of the Avatar. I love all the new content.
The Highvale Outskirts are a good addition. I also quite like The Crags, though most of my guild are spending a lot of time in the Kobold Expeditionary Camp these days.
Quoting: iiariGridiron Football (Amiga)
I may be the only person on Earth who adored this (Bethesda!) sports game from the 80's, but a completely top down, X's and O's (literally) perspective is actually the most fun and strategic way to play American Football. Damn Madden for convincing everyone to go 3D isometric! It's ruined the genre for 30 years!
You are not the only person, me and my brother used to plug two mice into one Amiga to play head to head, I often think it would be perfect as a mobile game. Though I also enjoyed Madden :) My recollection is that the physics engine from Gridiron was licensed for use in the original Madden, though I don't have any sources to hand.

Freespace 2 has a native source port, any particular reason you're running it under Wine?
My most recently played games include:
Rust - It is playing nice and smoothly for me in 4K; looks lovely. I'm on the GOL Rust server. It does a good job of keeping me interested. Latest version has updated blue-print and workbench mechanics, so it takes longer to get to higher equipment level.
Dungeon Warfare - Very good and very addictive tower-defence style game. Good for a short session.
Tomb Raider (2013) - Finished off the main story (and most of the side quests, but not all) in 18 hours of play. Thinking to complete more content before uninstalling. Very happy with the game, graphics, story, and controls.
Ziggurat - This is a Heretic / Hexen style FPS with procedurally generated levels, a range of weapons and abilities. Good for short intense sessions. If you're a fan of Doom, Quake, Serious Sam 3 BFE, then you'll probably like this. Nice and smooth in 4K.
7 Days To Die - I've played "so much" of this! For the price I paid ($8 on sale) I've got lots of enjoyment playing this in single player mode. Never before have I been so immersed in a game where it felt like me surviving in an apocalyptic setting. Had lots of fun experimenting: If I design a base like "this", will it keep the zombies at bay. Feral night is very tense.
FORCED
Evoland
Mad Max (Vulkan)
Dirt Rally
Planet Explorers
Shellshock Live
The games vary in difficulty. So I pay Mad Max when I am looking for a more relaxing gaming experience and go to FORCED when I am looking to be challenged. Dirt Rally for when I want to go fast and Evoland when I'm feeling like going back in time.
