GOG have revived some more classic titles for Linux thanks to DOSBox! Battle Chess Special Edition which includes three games now supports Linux on GOG.
They all come together in one purchase and it includes:
- Battle Chess
- Battle Chess II: Chinese Chess
- Battle Chess 4000
GOG sent over a copy of the bundle, as usual, for me to check how well they're doing with their classic Linux games. I've tested all three and didn't encounter any issues at all. They come bundled with DOSBox, so they all work right away without any configuration.
I remember playing a version of Battle Chess on the Amiga when I was a lot younger, crazy to see how far games have advanced in that time. For games like this though, especially the original, it's hard to beat some of the classics. This sure does bring back some awesome memories!
Quoting: silmeth...won’t pay for the DOS demakes though. ;-)Yep. The DOS version is pretty crap compared to the original.
I wonder if there is a market for a proper remake with modern graphics?
Quoting: GuestGOG’s dosbox build requires pulseaudio :(.I usually use distro dosbox rather than gog dosbox.

You can configure dosbox yourself, and use system one. GOG rarely actually patch it.
Quoting: GuestGOG’s dosbox build requires pulseaudio :(.We thought about rebuilding our DOSBox without the PulseAudio requirement, but it's not gonna happen anytime soon, since most of our Linux users don't have that problem. Try using your system DOSBox with our config files! :)

Quoting: linuxvangogHi guys, linuxvangog from GOG here.
Welcome to GOL!

Would be nice if you could indicate that DosBox is patched in the game card :) And regarding configs - sure, I often simply take GOG configs, adjust them slightly if needed (for example to use MIDI port for Fluidsynth if the game is using MIDI music), and if it's Windows only GOG release, to use Linux paths and output=opengl instead of output=ddraw.
So your specific tweaks and image bundling are surely very useful.
Quoting: silmethI’d totally buy those if they were Amiga versions packed with UAE and AROS kickstart, won’t pay for the DOS demakes though. ;-)
I used to play it on the ST, which I think both versions were identical, except I think the ST's version had more crack to the sound, whereas the Amiga was kind of built around using sound samples, so it produced a much cleaner (some would say unique) sound quality. It's a shame they never did a Paula II chip..
