In the mood for a retro-inspired Metroidvania? External Visions [Steam] looks pretty damn good and it released for Linux recently.
There's a lot and I really do mean a lot of retro-inspired games available on Linux now. I've played a lot of them and sometimes they really do end up feeling too retro. Including too many restrictions, over the top screen filters and clunky controls to try and emulate the classic feel which ends up putting me off. In this case, it looks like it has a decent balance between the retro style and a good gameplay experience, check it out:

About the game:
An artistic metroidvania with a classic NES era gameplay, taking the player through the life of an average man escaping his depression in a partly imaginary world he created around him.
The game takes place in an old, still running business housing. Main character meets various different people on his path to find more happiness in his life.
In each environment different types of enemies await to attack you, each with its own strengths and patterns. Improve your tactics while fighting in either of the 3 difficulties.
It's only £3.49 on Steam (and that's without it being on sale!), so it certainly has a reasonable price. It seems it flew under the radar of most, with only four reviews in total. Looks like a lot of love went into it, so a good time to highlight it for the retro gaming fans on Linux.
