Remember the Ataribox? [Official Site] The Linux-powered retro console that will turn to crowdfunding sometime soon just had the reveal of their Joystick.

I'm quite excited by it, as it does sound like an interesting Linux-powered device. Considering they said before that you will be able to get full access to the underlying Linux OS, it could be a damn fine little unit.

Take a look at the pictures they shared recently (from their official Facebook):

The design looks perfect. Stylish and simple!

Also, something that was missing from Valve's Steam Machines, which the Ataribox will have is proper access to streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO GO and more. Which was also confirmed in another of their Facebook updates. I assume this means it will have proper applications set up to just tap and browse.

I'm pretty keen to hear more about what retro and "current" titles they're planning to have on it. It's sounding more and more interesting! I still have some worries about how it's going to turn out, but I'm staying positive until we see what happens with the crowdfunding that has yet to be started. If it turns out okay, I will be first in line for one for sure. As a Linux fan and a tech enthusiast, it ticks many boxes for me.

Finally, they have a survey up at the moment where you can tell them what you feel is important, like full access to the Linux OS inside.

Quoting: throghWow, another bunch of hardware supporting proprietary platforms: Making "Linux" just a little bit more feeling like closed-in systems? No thank you. :D
How exactly does any amount of proprietary hardware running Linux make Linux itself feel like a closed system? Or is it just some subset of distributions (like SteamOS) that rub you the wrong way?

You should stop fighting imagined evils and start enjoying the fact that our favourite operating system is slowly but surely conquering the world. Linux is still an open project under an open license, and no one will be able to change that.

If some particular flavour of Linux isn't to your taste, use something else. If some software running on Linux doesn't fit into your narrow mold of what is acceptable, even if it fully complies with the licenses, please just ignore it. Your constant grumbling is pointless.

Quoting: WJMazepasIt's not Android, nor Android or Chrome OS works with AMD CPU. And if they were using Android they would say it rather than saying its linux because to Android is more known to the general public than linux

android DO run on x86, i dont know why it would be compatible with AMD.

I dont know the specific information why, but Android only works with intel CPUs in X86 version. You can even see that in the Android x86 page.

Also, if they were going with Android, the best route would be go with a Snapdragon or even Tegra X1 because the support for Android is really good, a lot of games already were ported to Shield TV like Doom 3 BFG, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 5.
Besides it runs 4k UltraHD content from every streaming app availabe on the Android like Netflix, HBO GO and Amazon Prime

That's not entirely true. I have (now non-working) an HP Touchsmart that has a Turion X2 in it that ran Android x86, it even supported the touch screen and everything. Downside was as soon as they released a version that did that, I had booted it up, and then randomly the screen became corrupted and after that it was simply dead. So not sure if Android killed it or.. well it is an HP.

Never saw an AMD working with Android. Even for app development they alway recommended Intel, only now with Ryzen that AMD became good to develop for Android.

Well, even so it's pretty hard to see a Android device with an AMD

Yeah, but if Atari launched a Android device with Tegra X1, im pretty sure that both capcom and Nvidia(who ported the game) would like an increase in sales with zero cost.

Doom 3 was one of the games working in the Pixel C for example, so it's not impossible that other games were ported to a new device with Tegra X1 and Android

that make a hell lot of sense if it sell well.
otherwise they will ignore it due to the support cost (yes there is aways a cost)
