CRYENGINE to get improved Linux support

In a recent 'meet the team' blog post interview, David Kaye the Lead System Engineer at Crytek talked a little about his role and how improved Linux support is coming.

If you didn't know, CRYENGINE added support for Linux as a platform for games along with a full OpenGL implementation back in 2015. However, that's only for getting your game onto the platform, what if you wanted to develop with CRYENGINE on Linux? Seems they're working towards that too!

Here's a little important cut from the post:

What is your main focus at the moment?

My main focus at the moment is improving workflows for our developers. One way we’ve done this is by implementing a code review/test compilation workflow using Helix Swarm, which moves multiple pre-submission steps into one. In parallel to this, I am also working on porting the resource compiler to Linux.

What feature are you most looking forward to coming to CRYENGINE next?

I’m looking forward to rolling out improved cross-platform support. It’s a subject that’s important to me and I’ve already been working behind the scenes to bring the resource compiler to Linux as part of this process.

I will also be happy if we can roll out some more CMake improvements. There are many good features, but I think we can still make the experience a little smoother. It’s always rewarding to make a change that simplifies somebody’s workflow.

It will be interesting to see if this is part of a wider attempt to bring the entire CRYENGINE editor to Linux. It sure would make it a more attractive option for developers I'm sure. 

We do already have Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot Engine and many more that have their actual editors on Linux, so it's only natural Crytek would want to get in on it too.

Only FarCry 1 was made on a CryEngine. After that used custom engines of Ubisoft, and ubi is a company that doesnt support linux :(

OMG, I LOL'ed!

As far as Far Cry goes, that one didn't catch on to me. I beat Crysis, and the feel of it was good, but I didn't like the game itself too much. Never bought the sequels because of that. What I'm trying to say is, more games on those engines sounds good to me. :)

IIRC Lumberyard dropped any plans for Linux support, in typical back-stabbing fashion.

Start Citizen don't rely on Lumberyard for Linux support, they modify the engine heavily, so I don't think we should care about what Lumberyard support or not.

SHHHHHHhhh. If they pretend it doesn't exist, then they can assume they have the best engine version out the door, and Chris Roberts owes them shitloads...

But yeah, DITCH OPENGL, MOVE TO VULKAN, OR GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN CRYTEK! I somehow doubt this company will be around next year.

A quick search tells me that they already have beta support for Vulkan (official docs. Full support is on the roadmap for version 5.6, to be released in the summer.

We shouldn't jump to conclusions. Sure, Crytek is not Epic, but there's room for more than one advanced game engine out there. And I see no reason to suspect that they're going out of business.

Their next game is in Early Access by the way. Should get Vulkan but no indication of Linux support AFAIK.

Then you must be very new to Crytek and their history of not paying their staff and having many leave, along with their terrible attempts at lawsuits. A successful company does not these things... I hope they pull their finger out and find a way to survive, but the CEO's seem to be 12 year olds.

A successful company treats their employees well and doesn't stoop to stupid lawsuits? If only that was true...

I'm not trying to cheer for them, just saying that it's pointless to speculate on their financial success. It's not even relevant.

Crytek has struggled financially (and Star Citizen producers have taken over some of their developers).
But I don't see a reason to wish them anything bad.

Lumberyard is not about supporting a platform as an engine or sometin else but it is very flexible license for owners that want to modify etc thr engine. Thus VULKAN will be available at soon with modified lumberyard engine by RSI. And somepoint rsi told they have linux client and server builds running for testing purposes. Yet no eta for public mature linux clients.
Then i will ditch dual boot.

Oh man you missed out, Crysis 2 was SO much better! The first was fun too, by all means, but the rather generic tropical island setting never did it for me. The sequel though... Ah man that was quite the experience!
