Eco [Official Site] is a hard game to properly describe, it's a detailed sandbox simulation game where players construct buildings and towns, establish a government with laws and it's backed up by a rich ecological simulation. It's also heading to Steam Early Access on February 6th.

Unlike a lot of building games, Eco actually has an end-game where your civilization needs to stop a meteor. To get there, you need to not destroy your environment in the process. Rivers can get polluted, causing farms to get poisoned. If you chop down all the trees, habitats for creatures will be destroyed and so on. Like in the real world, a lot of actions in Eco have knock-on effects.

It's already available directly from their official site, with Linux builds although as of the last update they added in the possibility to play in single-player which is not currently in the Linux version.

I spoke to the developer about the status of Linux support and they said:

Linux is a bit wonky right now. We're working on support.  It should work in client, but takes some setup on the server.

I tested out the Linux version today and they're right, it's not great right now. Last time I tested it worked, but now I can't even login as the input boxes for username and password double everything I put in. I've logged a bug report, some hopefully we can see that promptly fixed.

As for the Early Access launch having Linux support, they said:

Yeah thats the plan.

The trailer looks really interesting - well except for that one bit with the massive lag when the deer is shot

This could be what I've been waiting for! I try to live real life as ethically (by my standards) as I can, but in games you're usually forced to kill or destroy stuff. I love Cities Skylines, but you're still pretty much forced into growth and sprawl and traffic. I realise that's not real, but it would be nice to play with a green and peaceful strategy as an option, to create things I would want to create in the real world. A good education for children too.

I like killing and destroying stuff too, of course :p Mostly just in games.

It's on my radar since forever, i feel.

I like how more games try to include environmental effects in gameplay, more and more. I don't mind killing people with a chainsaw, but i like to be aware about the petrol i use to power my chaisaw.

I can't wait to destroy the ecosystem!!!

I actually bought into this with a 4-pack to support it almost a year ago it seems, now. Even did some streaming.

They give you access to their Slack, and I did help them test a couple regressions with the Linux builds. The server on Windows has a decent enough GUI for setting all the options, at which point you could copy the config files it generates over to the Linux version of the dedicated server, but the real-time management (e.g. viewing a list of and potentially banning users) wasn't really there.

Unfortunately, the client side bugs drove my friends away 'until it's on Steam and more stable', so this is good to see.

I had mixed feelings reading this. Like... "Awwwww... An eco-friendly... Maniac?!"

It would be good if it was strategy, like Settlers, Cultures and so on. It takes too much time (unless you collaborate) to do these things yourself:/

I can already predict 90% of streaming of this game will be trolling random people and poisoning their worlds.

Quoting: GuestWill this game have actual singleplayer so I can play solo or with bots?

I read here that the Windows build has singleplayer but not the Linux build yet is why I'm asking. I'd love to roam around solo in singleplayer.

Yes, the Singleplayer Button is still not working on Linux. But you can roam around solo already. All you need is to setup an server, and don't invite any other people :D
