A developer from the studio behind the awesome space shooter EVERSPACE [Steam] has given an update on the status of the Linux port.
For those unaware, EVERSPACE can be downloaded and installed on Linux even though it's not listed as supporting Linux on Steam. This is because it's currently in an unofficial state. Essentially, they want to get it in a good place before properly advertising it.
Here's what they said in the latest update on Steam:
I would like to share a short update on the current status of the development with you.
We are heading towards the next patch for Linux which will include an engine update to Unreal 4.17 and a fix for mouse input on Linux. Besides this there are some game play related fixes like fixes for the collisions for station turrets, the ancient warden teleportation, an issue with operating the gunship turret after cutscene playback, some problems with the menu navigation and some more.
Currently we are still struggling with a technical issue that breaks the loading of the engine plug-ins but is effective only in the shipping configuration of the game. This makes the debugging a bit more cumbersome than usual but also should be hopefully the last barrier for the patch to arrive.
Such a fantastic game to have on Linux, do check out my thoughts on it if you haven't. I have yet to pick up the expansion, which also supports Linux so I'm looking forward to having some time with that sometime soon too.
Quoting: pete910To be frank both are far from perfect and anyone that is saying different is lying.
The blanket statement of "NV drivers are better than AMD" is just plain wrong and has been for some time!
I can't judge the drivers quality, no one saw the source of the NVIDIA blob and I'm not quite interested in reading Mesa's source. The facts are simple: there are games that work better or at all on NVIDIA than on AMD and I've never seen the opposite, i.e. games that work better on AMD or don't work on NVIDIA. It's not even the driver that matters, it's just the userbase and priorities. Game devs and porters are much likely to make the game work on NVIDIA first and on AMD later if they have resources (or it just happens naturally). Even here, on GOL, the AMD userbase is almost three times smaller than NVIDIA's. Can't really tell if it's representative, of course. Steam survey shows even bigger difference (on the graph), 8.9% vs 84.9% but that's across all platforms.
I compared GPUs to popular OSes exactly because of that, Windows has enormously larger userbase so it's expected that it has priority. But Linux is gaining more traction each year so it's also changing. Same happens to AMD. Part of the problem is the fact that Mesa is more tightly integrated with the underlying distro, it uses a lot of system libraries and if the game ships its own different versions, well, bad things could happen (that is, probably, the issue that some of the EVERSPACE players have). NVIDIA's blob is pretty self-contained as it should run everywhere so it has close to none external dependencies.
Quoting: GuestI would be interested if anyone is running it with Mesa.
Some people run it without any workarounds, for others there are crashes on illegal instruction (but that seems to be a CPU lacking instruction sets issue, I saw something similar for another game and it's usually AMD CPU specific). A couple of positive responses regarding Mesa and AMDGPU support. Why not try it yourself? You can always refund or just wait until they properly support it, the dev seems to be committed to support Linux.
Quoting: GuestDon't be too quick to blame a cpu series. It's normally a build oversight (sse3 should not be assumed).
I remember feral stating that F1 2017 would not run due to lack of SSE3 on the older AMD CPU's
Quoting: GuestI would be interested if anyone is running it with Mesa.
It runs fine on mesa 17.x

May need to give it a while to process into HD or whatever YT does.
What I have found though is it's irrelevant if a port is good or not, nor if you have the best hardware in the land, It still does not cover up if you are complete and utter pants at the game in question ;) As you will see in that quick vid :S:
