Wine continues to mature with Wine 3.0 RC6

By -

The big Wine 3.0 is inching ever closer with the release of the sixth release candidate today with bug fixes.

Since Wine is currently in a code-freeze, no new features are being pulled in so they can make the 3.0 release as stable as possible, which means it's not too exciting. Still, every software needs to go through a period of stability to ensure a solid foundation to continue improving features.

Here's what they noted as fixed:

  • 3864  RedMon v1.7/1.9 (Redirection Port Monitor) fails to install/run
  • 36441  joy.cpl crashes when PS4 Gamepad connected via Bluetooth
  • 38671  valgrind shows an uninitialized write in dlls/advapi32/tests/security.c (test_CreateDirectoryA)
  • 38799  RaidCall 7.x crashes when joining a group/trying to test sound
  • 40254  mshtml:script test regression (timeout)
  • 40653  Castle of Illusion start on black screen and crash
  • 42588  Vietcong - graphics glitches since Wine 2.1
  • 43308  valgrind shows an uninitialized write in dlls/advapi32/tests/security.c (test_AddMandatoryAce)
  • 43309  valgrind shows an uninitialized write in dlls/advapi32/tests/security.c (test_token_security_descriptor)
  • 43310  valgrind shows several definite leaks in dlls/advapi32/tests/security.c
  • 43654  Arx Fatalis: Candlelight / Porch light leaks through the walls
  • 44175  stack corruption and crash with OpenSSH port
  • 44286  Regression: Default value in dropdown list is no longer select
  • 44332  Powerpoint 2007/2010 slideshow encounters an "unexpected error" trying to move past first slide

I still expected the main Wine 3.0 release to be this month.

Added this communication about release candidate from alexander julliard

https://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2018-January/121232.html

Folks,

I think that at this point, we have fixed most of the bugs that could be fixed during code freeze, so it looks like rc6 is going to be the last rc.

Please test it to confirm that there are no last minute issues.

Unless something major comes up, I'm planning to release the final 3.0
in a few days (as soon as I'm done writing the release notes...)

Thank you all for your work!

Before the official 3.0 release the wine developers should try and fix some of the outstanding audio bugs. That was the biggest issue that I had with wine last year. I compiled a list.

+++

  • Bug 30639 - Audio stuttering and performance drops in Star Wolves 3
    Status: UNCONFIRMED

  • Bug 41271 - Fallout 4 - Audio issues (no sounds, hangs when playing intro video)
    Status: STAGED

  • Bug 44257 - Divinity: Original Sin 2: Audio via pulseaudio has popping/crackling in music
    Status: UNCONFIRMED

  • Bug 44107 - Prey (2017) - Audio sometimes crackling
    Status: NEW

  • Bug 34097 - Mega Man Unlimited: Game works, sound is choppy and slow
    Status: UNCONFIRMED

  • Bug 42858 - Stuttering sound setting the OS to Windows 7 and higher on FreeBSD
    Status: UNCONFIRMED

  • Bug 42856 - osu! - high sound latency with winepulse compared to winealsa
    Status: UNCONFIRMED

  • Bug 34606 - No in-game and menu sounds in Oddworld Munch's Oddysee CD version (does not affect the remastered version)
    Status: UNCONFIRMED

  • Bug 41047 - Star Wars Racer videos have no sound
    Status: UNCONFIRMED

  • Bug 38668 - Wolfestein: The Old Blood crashes inside native XAudio2_7.dll
    Status: REOPENED

  • Bug 43846 - Prototype 1 and 2 no audio
    Status: UNCONFIRMED

Yeah, League of Legends also has weird crackling/poping with ingame sound, otherwise it works great.

It's been ages since I bought a Windows game to play with Wine, thanks to your video I went ahead and bought both NecroVisioN games.

May I ask how did you turn off the Vsync in this game? There's no in game setting or in the game's Bin/config.ini file either.

Glad to hear that info :) Do you use 32 or 64 bit wineprefix? Did you installed additional libraries like d3dx9 etc? Yes, my hardware and software differ a lot. I have Radeon RX580 (mesa-git) and Ubuntu 17.10, however I think that a problem is related to wine configuration. I use 64 bit wineprefix without additional libraries.

Thanks for information. I tried to play Risen 3 Enhanced Edition, thats why I choosed 64 bit wineprefix. It looks like a standard version of Risen 3 works good, however EE not.

Yeah enhanced edition is DX11 and 64bit but last time try this game dont run

However for this title type (DX11 - 64bit) staging is highly recommended
