AMD has announced today the worldwide release of their first Ryzen Desktop APUs with Vega graphics, could be an interesting choice for low-cost Linux gaming.
“When we launched our first Ryzen processors a year ago, we began driving innovation and competition across the PC market. We remain dedicated to this mission throughout 2018, as we further strengthen our Ryzen portfolio by adding two leadership APUs designed to meet the varying needs of today’s PC users,” said Jim Anderson, senior vice president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Business Group, AMD. "AMD Ryzen Desktop APUs are a perfect example of the innovation we bring to market for consumer and commercial PC users. Combining our high-performance CPU and GPU architectures, this new category of Ryzen desktop processors is designed to deliver a smooth overall computing experience, as well as the ability to enjoy true 1080p HD gaming, eSports or advanced display features through the visual fidelity of the built-in Radeon Vega graphics."
They currently come in these two editions, with both supporting FreeSync:
- Ryzen 5 2400G with Radeon RX Vega 11 Graphics: 4-Core, 8-Thread, 3.9 GHz, 1250 MHz, $169
- Ryzen 3 2200G with Radeon Vega 8 Graphics: 4-Core, 4-Thread, 3.7 GHz, 1100 MHz, $99
AMD have said that they will continue to use the AM4 socket, with motherboards requiring a BIOS update.
According to the press release, AMD say the 2400G offers "up to 156% more graphics performance than the Intel Core i5-8400" and "up to 21% more system performance than the Intel Core i5-8400". It will be interesting to see how they perform on Linux! Considering the price, if those percentages are even close to real-world performance, that's a pretty good deal compared with the Intel offering.
The CPU market is certain a lot more interesting with AMD firmly back in the game.
But according to this test (German | Google Translate link it's wiping the floor with the Intel CPU (especially with the iGPU).
Though, they were not able to get Ubuntu 17.10 with Kernel 4.15 to boot with the Raven Ridge.

with both supporting FreeSync
Being integrated, if these are paired with boards have any Displayport below version 1.2a does that nullify the Freesync support? Or is it only the monitor side with that that requirement?
How powerful is the vega die?
The Vega 11, in the 2400G, has the power of a RX 550.
I liked this video. This guy tested a lot of games, power comsuption and more.
I think that the performance is really good, but it suffers a bit in some games in 1080p.
I know what CPU and GPU stand for, but what does the A in APU stand for? "All-in-one?" :S:
According to wikipedia : AMD Accelerated Processing Unit (APU)
It's sold out, I'm not surprised.

I hope Raven Ridge 2 will work in AM4+ motherboards also, and that they offer a 8core version running at 4.5ghz, NOW that would be awesome, it's what I will hold out for to replace my 1600 CPU with.
Next generation of APUs is codenamed "Horned Owl" IIRC. They probably still won't have eight cores. The next immediate round of APUs would more likely be a refresh similar to Kaveri -> Godavari, same arch but revised manufacturing process and higher clocks w/ lower power.

2200G have better price than 2400G however this apus is for lite gaming aka 720p
However needs dual channel memory aka 2 sticks of ram and good memory frecuency aka 3200mhz (more expensive)
In other thing maybe when them have next gpu arquitecture (2020-2021) no more gcn*, maybe igpu improve so much
*Actually them needs many shaders to make similar geforce performance (gpu performance with same quantity of vram and bus) case:
Geforce GT 1030: 384 shaders
Radeon RX 550: 640 shaders
Vega 11: 704 shaders
Without forget more shaders needs more space aka bigger gpu and other issues related case tdp
^_^

I'm waiting for AMD to release Ryzen for laptops before buying a new one, is it known if a launch date has been defined yet?
There are already a few raven ridge laptops for sale with the 2500U/2700U. Many more are coming soon.
HP
Acer
Acer 2700U + RX 560
Lenovo is coming out with a model soon too, but I hear that might be single channel ram.

That's quite right and the whole line-up is disappointing.
EDIT: AMD APUs are ideal for lower-end Steam machines, aren't they?
