The incredibly useful SC Controller [GitHub] tool has a fresh update out that sees the return of AppImage support, a few new bits and some bug fixes.
Currently, you can't really use the Steam Controller without Steam. However, SC Controller is a driver and UI for working with it outside of Steam. It has profile support and even includes support for other popular gamepads now too.
Here's what's changed:
New:
- Return of AppImage support.
- Added setting for automatic turning off the controller
- Allowed to set displayed name even on button that does nothing (#321)
- Added button for _un_setting menu icon
- Added options to print pressed buttons to scc executable
Fixes:
- Switching profile while mouse cursor is in "rolling ball" motion may cause it to roll forever
- Modeshift hold and doubleclick times not being saved
- Shell command breaking with Unicode characters
- hid driver cannot be compiled on Gentoo
If you own a Steam Controller and you want to use it for anything outside of Steam, this application is basically essential. It's easy to use, it works well and it's enabled me to use my Steam Controller whenever and wherever I want.

Would be convenient to have a snap for it these days (?)

Another utility for this is when a game doesn't recognize the Steam Controller, like the truck simulators from SCS.
I also hope that the guys behind SC Controller could get this thing working on Linux:

Thanks for keeping us updated about 'sc-controller' (SCC) Liam. Indeed, it's thanks to your updates that I started using SCC in the first place. :)
I've been using SCC exclusively for over half a year now, and I love it. In fact I just finished up making an Insurgency config yesterday. :) What I love most about it is the independence it offers from Steam. I use it to surf the web, adjust volume and change tracks in my media player, and play all of my Steam games, non-Steam games, and Wine-Steam games.
And, please, consider supporting Kozek (SCC's Daddy) on Patreon in addition to Liam (you do support Liam, right?), he's friendly, responsive, and apparently never sleeps for all the work he's done and continues to do on SCC.

This is a very impressive project.
In order to play the GOG version of Pharaonic, I recently used the steam "Add a Non-Steam game" function and set the controller up using the steam overlay. It kind of defeats the purpose of buying on GOG, though, if I am still reliant on Steam for the controller interface. I should have tried SCC instead.
I appreciate all of Valve's linux support, but monopolies are always scary, even when they start out "nice".

Quoting: HoriI hope they will add Android support at some point :D I heard some people got it working by running a bare bones Linux distro virtually.
Unfortunately, I also heard it's not possible to do it without root access.
I they manage to do that, I may get a phone holder thing for my SC and then play Portal 2 when I'm on long trips.
There's no ARM build for Portal 2, or is there?
I doubt x86 emulators are fast enough for any game that's not nethack.
