Good news everyone! Event[0] [Official Site, Steam], the sci-fi narrative exploration game where you build a relationship with a lonely spaceship computer now has a rough Linux beta.

To remind yourself about it, here's the originally launch trailer:

I should note, that I haven't personally tested the beta. This is one game I will happily wait to be cleaned up for a proper release. I'm sure some of you will be interested to know about this though, that the developer really is trying to get the Linux version sorted.

From what I've been told, it currently has a few issues. The first of which, is that the game will start in French by default, achievements might not work and there's also an issue with the included version of the hunspell spell checker lib. There's also some possible audio issues if the game loses focus and possible other issues too.

To access it, i've been told it's currently public so if you own it on Steam you should be able to see the "linbeta" beta branch in the Steam properties for the game. Test at your own peril and give feedback in this linked topic.

Thanks for the tip micha! Also, to be clear, the game is also on GOG but the beta is currently Steam-only.

There has been a flury of activity and comments on their Steam forum about it. Has been uplifting to read after so little activity the last while.

Why do we care how Huns spell things, anyway?

If you are lucky, you can complete the game without issues. Of course after the first start, where you have to adjust resolution and language.
I ran into a rare not platform specific bug, where the ingame lighting was overblooming. But after a restart it was gone.
The game itself is great, graphics style reminded me a bit of the lo-fi sci-fi of Alien (the movie) or Alien: Isolation.
Interacting with a computer in a pretty sophisticated way via terminal is pretty cool. Depending on what you come up with, you can get pretty cool answers ;)

And yeah, it's can be completed in just a few hours, but there is more to discover. E.g. there are several endings.

Super! I held on to my key (I think from Humble) in hopes they would actually release a Linux version... have to activate it immediatly. I love scfi games with content.

BTW. I talked to the Dev of "The Norwood Suite" (last month's humble monthly) and he is looking for Linux beta testers (look into the discussions) and also supplied a beta build on request (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share it, so better ask in the thread). If anybody got some time - the game looks good and already runs pretty well according to the other tester in the thread.

Serious answer, libhunspell is used to autocorrect misspelled words/typos so that the game's AI can respond correctly.

Works fine for me after I switched the language in the audio settings.

Cool game too, although a bit slow going. Clearly Linux influenced, so great that you can finally play it on Linux :)

Hmm, yes maybe...but given that Linux is the dominant Unix like system these days, I guess the developers rather looked at it than the original Unix :p
