FOX n FORESTS [Steam, Official Site] is an action platformer with RPG elements that will allow you to change the seasons, it sounds pretty fun and they're now saying it will launch with Linux support this Spring.

They're not giving out anything more firm than "Spring 2018" right now, but Linux support has been confirmed to me. It's actually a game I wrote about back in 2016 that was funded on Kickstarter.

You will control Rick the Fox, armed with a magical crossbow that enables you to switch between two different seasons per-level. You will use this mechanic to complete levels, making platforms out of falling leaves and so on.

“FOX n FORESTS will surely speak to a wide audience,” says Marc Wardenga, Head of Games at EuroVideo. “References to the golden age of classic 16-Bit games, mixed with a unique soundtrack and contemporary, precise, and accessible gameplay, will bring back fond memories of retro games.”

They got a new teaser up too, take a look:

The developer said they were inspired by Super Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts, Wonder Boy in Monster World, ActRaiser 2, and the Castlevania and Zelda series. However, it certainly sounds a bit like 2016's Seasons after Fall, which also had a fox as the main character and season mechanics. The developer did say before they were in contact with the developer of Seasons after Fall and that the similarities are a coincidence, with the actual gameplay being quite different.

I have to admit, it does look pretty fun. Hopefully we will cover it in more detail at release. Will keep you informed of a proper release date when we get it.

This looks and feels almost like a real SNES title. The only real difference is that the SNES didn't output in widescreen.

Looks pretty, but what I would love to see is the Rayman games ported. They're one of my favorite platform games, ever since the first one was released on the Atari Jaguar, and I bought it for a dollar.

Still haven't beaten the first one, but I have completed Origins and... one of the other ones.

I'll have to buy this one when it's released.
