It seems we're going to get more strategy game goodness, as Feral Interactive have confirmed Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia [Steam, Feral Store] will release for Linux. This is fantastic, as the Total War games are popular with a lot of people, having more of them on Linux is ideal.

Curiously, this is not a game they previously teased. It's now showing up as a new game on their teaser radar, so we still have the "It's just a shot away" game to be properly announced. This makes three games announced/teased for Linux this year so far from Feral, not a bad start!

About the game:

Thrones of Britannia is a standalone Total War game which will challenge you to re-write a critical moment in history, one that will come to define the future of modern Britain. With ten playable factions, you must build and defend a kingdom to the glory of Anglo-Saxons, Gaelic clans, Welsh tribes or Viking settlers. Forge alliances, manage burgeoning settlements, raise armies and embark on campaigns of conquest across the most detailed Total War map to date.

It releases for Windows on April 19th, with Feral Interactive saying the Linux version will release "shortly after Windows".

“The choices players make in THRONES OF BRITANNIA’s campaigns have far-reaching consequences,” said David Stephen, Managing Director of Feral Interactive. “As they make decisions in response to a sequence of seismic events, players will forge their own diverging paths through the turbulent years following King Alfred the Great’s initial victory over the Viking invasion.”

Feral aren't giving out many other details yet, with system requirements due closer to release.

It's said that this is the first in "series of standalone games inspired by great turning points of history" so it's likely there's more to come after this as well.

Is this going to be substantially different from any other Total War game? Seems like if you've played one Total War game, you've pretty much played them all.

It will be about the same, there are some changes to certain aspects as recruiting, technology etc.
https://www.pcgamer.com/thrones-of-britannia-makes-significant-changes-to-the-total-war-formula/

That said, it will be roughly the same as all others still. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since the game has success and it's fans are asking for more.

I'm looking forward to this, always wanted to make a Viking Kingdom in Britain and I like the mix of the strategic map mixed with real time battles.

Maybe even a Vulkan port? Probably not, because they very likely have the engine ported to OpenGL for older Total War games which run good enough too. But we'll see.

Now this is a surprise I didn't expect - for some reason I thought because it is based on Atilla which was brought to Linux by CA internally, and because they're not doing Linux or MAC work internally anymore, that we would simply miss out.

I'm very happy about this - thank you Feral once again!

If you want to support Feral Interactive or other porters, you MUST buy it on Linux and play their games on Linux platform within 2 weeks after buy. If you're not playing ported games on Linux within 2 weeks after buy or playing them another operating system (No metter Windows or WINE), all money goes to game creators, not for their porters.
So you MUST play Linux games within to weeks after buy.
It's not my opinion, it's Aspyr official answer on question how they get profit from Steam.
So, my friends, after buying Linux game, we must (or should if you arn't agree) play it on Linux first two week.

To the best of my knowledge, you must play on Linuy if you did not buy on Linux.

The best way would by the way be to buy from Feral (or Aspyr respectively) store in the first place, which will make no share being deducted by some foreign shop (and were it doesn't matter when you play).

Eike, you are right, but there are so many games on steam which people bought but never played. If they bought them from web browser or Steam mobile application (Which very popular) after 7 days their money goes through game creators, not Linux or Mac OS X porters, because Steam mobile application at Valve's counter, detected as Windows user (Not Steam's Windows client).
Whole my post was about this kind of marketing, because most important for game developers is Market Share (It not always supplies from Steam Hardware/Software survey).

Yes, better safe than sorry!
(While in this case, you never feel the sorry and thus won't ever change you behaviour if nobody tells you...)

Steam needs a "Purchase for Linux where available" option. It is weird for the porting houses especially. And even harder for those games gotten from humble bundle, etc. I am sure they also just go to the original publishers.

The annoying thing about "buy it directly from them" statements is that we all already have too many different accounts everywhere and would prefer not to have to open new accounts on new store pages. This is why I like Steam and GoG.

Though I am guilty of setting up a Beamdog account for the NWN:EE beta.

It's a Total War game & it's going to have Linux support, that's all I need to know. It will be mine.

I am torn on seeing yet another TW game being ported. On one hand, strategy is hands down my favorite singleplayer genre (second only to MMOs), and it's a blessing to have such a great selection of strategy games available on my OS of choice. On the other hand, we have some glaring gaps elsewhere that still needed filling. Such as aforementioned MMOs, but also RPGs in general. If I knew that Feral can and will churn out another dozen AAA games this games, I'd still welcome this release - but if this is going to be one of three high-profile ports we will be getting in all of 2018 (like 2017 felt to me), I'd have opted for something else, given the choice.

the feral website had 2 signs, one that was tombraider, one that was not revealed.
now it has 2 signs of games revealed and still has one sign of an game not revelead.

3 games confirmed! i wonder what the thirdy one will be
Asu Feb 19, 2018
yeah, CA probably has a very multiplatform friendly game engine. Thanks SEGA!
elmapul Feb 19, 2018
at this point, i'm wondering if they are porting games or engines and just testing the export function with some Q/A.
not that this is a bad thing, but i would like to see more games that i want to play, not games that if i buy, its because i want to support linux, and as result more games that i dont want get ported...
Whitewolfe80 Feb 19, 2018
Not Really a game for me, but really good to see closer to windows release schedule. Can you play on the side of the Vikings there though? that would be much better imo :P

Total War: WARHAMMER was the only Total War Game i actually enjoyed, but because the story interested me as i have been always a fan of Warhammer Fantasy Setting. So WARHAMMER 2 would be much better for me.

Anyway good to see another Linux port poping up.

Well techincally any faction you play other than the Britons (welsh) would be a viking or a celt.

This is excellent news. I am no fan of the Warhammer editions as I considerably prefer a historical backdrop. I love this setting and it will be clearly on my wishlist. That being said I will probably not buy it on release day that CA has a history of releasing clearly unfinished games, which is making me very cautious now.
Joeyboots80 Feb 19, 2018
Feral is awesome. I wouldn't have so many great games without them. Going to be getting this one for sure. ^_^
MintedGamer Feb 19, 2018
I'm still waiting for Total War: Warhammer 2.
The first one is excellent as a game and as a port made by Feral.

This is still the good news.

Same here, TW: WH2 is the top of my wish list for this year. The first game is awesome and I would buy the second and the third and all the DLC in-between.

I've played Empire, Shogun 2, and the Warhammer Total War games. No, they aren't games for the impatient. I can say that I do have the patience, and I enjoy the grand strategy a lot.
Purple Library Guy Feb 20, 2018
So many strategy games :(
So many strategy games :D
ElectricPrism Feb 20, 2018
This is almost my cup of tea -- maybe I'll give it a go.

I feel like I need something refreshing to play, I have a unquenchable thirstm hopefully Feral has some atypical ports up their sleeve.
Leopard Feb 20, 2018
Nice one
