The Linux beta of Arma 3 [Steam] is once again up to date with the Windows client at version 1.80 (meaning for now multiplayer with Windows gamers is possible), this also brings compatibility with the Tac-Ops Mission Pack.

"Wait, what? Arma 3 isn't on Linux!"—yes it is. The Linux (and Mac) versions aren't advertised on Steam as they're considered "experimental ports" by Bohemia Interactive. The porting work is being done by Virtual Programming, with the Linux version usually updated once a new version is already out for Windows. Buying it on Steam will allow you to install and play it like any other Linux game. See more on that here.

This latest update to Arma 3 for us adds support for the Arma 3 Tac-Ops Mission Pack [Steam], which includes 3 Singleplayer Operations (spread across 7 missions) for the experienced Arma player.  There's a lot of other changes too, which you can read about here. Most of the big stuff came in Arma 1.78 which we've skipped over to 1.80.

It's really good to see Bohemia Interactive continue to contract Virtual Programming to keep the ports updated, I know plenty of people who've had a lot of fun with them. Even I've recently come to quite enjoy it and I would never have if it wasn't on Linux.

Quoting: riusmaDoes the game have a "solo campaign" that make it worth its price? Would love to give it a try in multi but I'm afraid I will never have the time at the right moment for that... :(

Arma serie is known for its great community. If the campaign is not enough for you, you can try almost unlimited amount of user made modifications, missions, campaigns etc. You can also try multiplayer, since Windows and Linux clients are in sync again, you will always find a lot of servers with many players online.

Check www.armaholic.com, official forums or Steam workshop.

Yes, and I really like the way it works. Everything you find throughout the missions, you can bring back to the base and use in future missions. The main campaign of course has a goal, but many missions you choose by yourself, which order you want to complete them in.

My only complaint is that ArmA 3 doesn't use Steam cloud, so I have had to complete some missions a couple of times, since I often forget to backup the saves myself.

Other than that I would say that the game is very good, and if it is true as jaycee says

Quoting: GuestBI are collecting statistics on which platform the game is being run on, independently of Steam's sales figures. They will know if you are using the game on Linux so in this sense it counts as a Linux sale.
then BI can see that at least one more is playing the game on Linux ;)

Ok guys, just bought it (with APEX and some DLC) and now installing it! One more penguin on the front-line! :)

Will try the solo soon... and maybe multi in a month or two if I'm not too bad at it!

I guess its best news for week.
Infact i prefer in-house products much more than 3rd party company products. Thus arma 3 is almost best 3rd party product i have ever test on linux. Fps and quality is much more higher than windows version on my rig.
But still arma 3 on windows better than arma 3 on linux cuz arma 3 has a lot of tools in windows. (Mod, editor,launchers..)
Now i just want to test battle royal mod under linux.

Well, in the end, I had to go from there it. I'm hanging fire on the DLC for now, since I'm not huge on multiplayer, but looking forward giving this a try.

My whole thing here was whether the controller/joystick input issues were ever fixed or not; last time I tried, it's trying to map everything to a virtual Xbox 360 controller or something, using an external config file that needs hand editing. Most of the buttons on my HOTAS beyond a certain point (Saitek X52 Pro) just wouldn't register, and 'fire guns' and 'yaw right' were double-mapped on the right trigger if trying to play with an actual 360 controller, making flying a helicopter... interesting.

If the input issues are all sorted, then awesome - this is literally the only thing holding me back from playing this on Linux. On Windows, I can have a wheel+pedals combo (Logitech G27) hooked up for driving ground vehicles like Jeeps, my HOTAS for flying planes and choppers, and still have working mouse+keyboard for infantry actions, all at the same time, with no conflicts and no dead buttons.

I'll see if I can test this again at some point soon and report back. :)

OK, 36 hours on the game since I bought it (mostly training, but I'm halfway on Laws of War campaign)... I think I'm in love with it!
