Not enough RPGs on Linux for you? Last Epoch [Official Site], a loot-based action RPG that involves time travel is coming to Linux.

It's currently on Kickstarter, where the developer is hoping to get at least $210K in funding with $53K already pledged. They have around 24 days to go so they have plenty of time to gather funding.

You can see a preview of it with their Kickstarter video below:

Here's what it will feature:

  • Offline and online multiplayer action
  • Time travel and high fantasy world
  • 5 base classes that advance into 10 powerful mastery classes
  • A deep skill system with augment trees for each skill
  • Engrossing loot and crafting system
  • Massive end-game content and replayability, trading, PvP, Cycles(seasons), Ladders, and Achievements
  • Epic storytelling, memorable characters and environments, voice acting, journals, and hidden secrets

In regards to the time travel aspect of it, the developer said:

Throughout the story, you will travel to four distinct eras in time and see how each zone changes throughout the ages, each change bearing lore implications that will keep you invested in the setting.

Sadly, the demo they currently have is Windows-only. The good news is that they seem committed to the Linux build, with their Community Manager sending out a Twitter post about testing the game on Linux. They've been testing it on an AMD system, with them discovering the Unity double-input bug.

This game looks great. Will be following this project. Looking forward to how it turns out.

I've been hanging out in their Discord asking for a Linux demo all weekend and today I got a test build to try out.

They utilize a unity launcher where you can select resolution, checkbox for windowed mode, monitor selector etc.

I've only had time to play it for about 10 minutes, but so far everything seems to work fine except a small graphical glitch on the ground. Performance is not that great when there are multiple enemies on screen at the same time, dipped down to about 15 fps at some point. But in town I got around 40-50 fps, with a quick dip down to 36 at one point.

I'm on a i5 3570k, 16gb ram and a RX 480. Developers say the demo is quite gpu intensive and I can confirm mine was at 100% basicly all the time.

For a pre-alpha I'm pretty impressed they managed to get a Linux build up and running and performing decent.

Looks like I'll be backing this on Kickstarter!

I noticed that in the video. Performance looked marginal. But it is still in development, so hopefully they'll get things sorted out in time for release.

It otherwise looks pretty decent. Maybe we'll finally get our native Linux Diablo 3 killer.

Funny that all those people wore the same shirt to work that day. What a coincidence.

Anyway, the gameplay looks really good. Looks like a game I'd have a lot of fun playing.

Diablo 3 killer? I guess I didn't know we were waiting for one.

I really want to try this, but I really don't want to use discord. I hope they put up a Linux demo on their website.

Got the Demo too, runs pretty solid on my GTX970. The feature list looks very promising, I deeply hope the can keep up to their promises. If so, this may be the next big ARPG after Diablo 3 got basically put into maintenance mode.

Ah, the Unity double input bug. For me it happens when I play Assault Android Cactus, with a controller configured with Steam Big Picture (with exception of Valve's SC). I believe Rocket League suffers from the same problem.

That there's a functioning pre-alpha Linux demo is promising enough to prime my optimism pump, except Kickstarter. Here's hoping cherubs of Lovely Linux Light shower them with the gilded chocolate coins of luck.

Well, I have been. I just haven't found anything that's as fun and addictive as Diablo 3. Torchlight 2 isn't bad. Victor Vran has its charm. But Diablo 3 is the one I keep returning to.

But send feedback on discord for the dev

Well, the Diablo 3 'killer' is already running wild for a few years now, and it's PoE (Path of Exile).

Unfortunately it's Windows-only and the wine version was *so* bad performance-wise it was just unplayable in hardcore mode.
Perhaps that has changed since I tried 2 years ago.

Just downloading the new Linux build (which sadly takes a while with my countryside dsl :( ). Great to see such early Linux support, so keep this up. ;)

Downloading the demo now. Gonna check it out tonight when I get off work. Will definitely give feedback. Thanks Michelle!

Good luck with the demo! If you're on mesa and have issues with some ground effects, that might affect your performance alot. I found that setting disable_blend_func_extended = true helps alot, although it makes the ground black.
