As you might imagine, Puzzle With Your Friends allows you to build a series of puzzles by either yourself or cooperatively with a friend. It’s a casual sort of game, without much in the way of pressure or even points to worry about. Building the puzzle at your own pace is all that matters.

About

  • Singleplayer- and different multiplayer-modes (Co-Op and Versus)
  • 18 Fantastic and hand-drawn artworks from different games and artists
  • Compete with your friends and other players on the Steam Leaderboards
  • Integrated multiplayer chat-system
  • Includes Trading-Cards, Achievements and Emoticons!

This is definitely a very niche sort of title. I can’t remember the last time I put together a jigsaw puzzle but, even so, I think it’s a lovely to have these types of games on Linux. There is also a promise of more artwork, modes and features as time goes by which should hopefully keep puzzle fans satisfied.

You can get Puzzle With Your Friends on Steam, where it’s on sale for the next few days. The developer has also stated that the first 200 buyers will get an extra copy to gift for a friend.

Thanks for the tip Lazora

History, sci-fi, technology, cooking, writing and playing games are things I enjoy very much. I'm always keen to try different genres of games and discover all the gems out there.

Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.

Damn, I have always wanted a decent Jigsaw program for Linux, but it requires the ability to import your own images. This doesn't look like it has that ability?

You can try Palapeli, that's got ability to import and a variety of piece shapes. I do get the occasional random crash, but it seems to save frequently and start up fast so that's not much of a hardship. It's free, too!

I'd say the main draw on this one is the multiplayer, which I can see being appealing.

Checked out Animated Puzzles on Steam?
You can play 'Career' mode to unlock more puzzles as you play or unlock everything immediately. Workshop support, download as many as you please. Create your own puzzles.
Looks good, plays great and runs smooth as a babys butt.

Puzzle With Your Friends has the interesting multiplayer thing going on... I'm taking the bait. :)

Edit: After playing one puzzle, I can only say that the controls are not good.
Often picking the wrong pieces or not picking them up at all, often not connecting to matching pieces without re-positioning the piece onto the exact same place again or even twice over, not clearly marking which pieces are locked in the correct position... to be honest, it's pretty weak.
Lets hope they fix the mechanics and add more puzzles, workshop support, custom level support etc ASAP.
Really can't recommend it as it is. Get Animated Puzzles instead tbh (note that AP is strictly single player)

The funny thing about jigsaw puzzle games is that absolutely nothing has ever managed to do better than good old xjig. I remember patching xjig a long time ago to support 24 bit screen modes and other image formats, but the only "maintainer" didn't respond to anything.

Some weeks ago I installed a new little Linux gaming PC for my parents. That's when I learned that there is a big potential market for videogames for eldery people that is yet untapped.

My parents love to play the KPatience games and KMahjongg while listening to classical music via Spotify. Luckily both those games are done really well: Easy to use and nice graphics.

And my mother loves jigsaw puzzles on her iPad. But her preferred app stopped working and other apps are infested with adds and those apps you can buy are either for kids or are missing important features.

It's outright absurd that it's so difficult to find a jigsaw puzzle game that's done right - be it on iPad or Linux. And I would contest that this is a niche. More and more elderly people are playing videogames and their taste differs very much from what the usual "gamer" loves.

If you are a programmer reading this you can probably make a little fortune with good games for people who love games like patience/solitaire etc. BUT they have to be made right!

For a jigsaw game I have some tips - based on what I learned from my mother's preferences. A good jigsaw game should have:

  • a user interface with TESTED usability

  • a user interface with high quality graphics

  • import function for images and a huge collection of gorgeous photographs with a usable collection manager (filter functions...)

  • lots of options to adjust how you can interact with the jigsaw pieces (automatic placement of edge pieces, sorting, filtering, hints...)

  • and most important: settings to adjust the size/number of the jigsaw pieces (= different difficult settings)

  • no advertisement inside the game client (people who sit in their leather chairs with some fine wine while playing a game just don't want to see crappy adds) ;)

This game should be considered as an Indie. It will be optimised in time and get more game options later on. It is great to see he released it for Linux on Day 1! And there will be no paid DLC or anything in future.

More translations (Dutch) will be also available in time. And the introduction price is really doable. Give it a chance! :)

I've tried Palapeli. Puzzle Master is the one I used to use on Windows, and it does work great with Wine. But is a little slow (well it was a long while ago when I last tried it. It's definitely the bar that is set high for a good Jigsaw Puzzle program. It's been a while since I tried Palapeli, but it wasn't quite there yet.

Quoting: GuestI considered making a jigsaw puzzle years ago but the legal issues that come with selling a game are too big. It’s like the government doesn’t want people to do things. (I think it’s similar in most countries on Earth.)

Pretty sure that's why Steam is so popular, it's easy to publish your games through.

To say nothing of Itch.io.

That’s unrelated to the legal issues though.

Curious, what's the legal issues for making a Jigsaw puzzle? Find some artwork from Creative Commons?
