Just announced by Feral Interactive, Rise of the Tomb Raider will release for Linux this month after the Mac version.
This will be the twenty first Linux port from Feral (counting the Dawn of War II and Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai standalones together with the main games), although they are also bringing Life is Strange: Before the Storm and Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia to Linux so there's more to look forward to this year.
The game will release April 12th for Mac, with no reason currently stated for the later release of the Linux version. There's likely a very good reason for the delay though, the last thing Feral would want is a delay, so don't fret. Hopefully they will announce the Linux system requirements soon too, as that is also unknown right now.
As a reminder, Feral will be livestreaming the game on Linux tomorrow at 5PM UTC on their official Twitch Channel. Here's a handy timer to help you:
The Linux version will be using Vulkan, so hopefully it will perform well. An advantage of getting the game later, is that we get all the DLC with the Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration edition.
If you wish to ensure your purchase counts as a Linux sale and support future Linux ports, you can purchase it directly from Feral's store. Alternatively, you can purchase it on the day of release from the Humble Store (affiliate link) or Steam directly. We don't generally recommend buying it before it's released, although in the case of the Feral store, there's no issue with that as it goes to them directly.
Exciting, April is going to be a good month!
I wonder why they chose to stream the Linux version when Mac version is releasing two days later.Probably because Linux gaming is much more popular than macOS.
Great! Now will I be able to run it on a 980 I wonder?
I wish I was being sarcastic ><
Yes , probably you can. Why you thought that way?
The last game chugs a bit when I crank the settings

Last game? F1 2017?
I can get 50ish fps average on my Gtx1050 when eveything set to high , not ultra. Your card is way stronger than mine.
Define "a bit" term :D
My personal rule is not spending more than RM100 per game. So, I'll wait when on sale with 50%++ discounts.
Lastly, FYI to GoL readers, I don't have any PSN account but I always comparing any AAA PC game prices with PS Store as it's always sell their games at "fullprice" (idk if PS Asia's games are region locked or not). "Full price" in Malaysia is consider between RM200 - RM250 depending on currency exchange and game publisher itself.
i wish they could put vulkan in tr2013 because the performance issues are really annoying especially if i have a 980ti i should be getting smooth frame rates.hopefully developers will stick with vulkan and just do away with opengl.i may be asking for too much but vulkan is the future.Same here. The shanty town and some other areas really tank the performance which is frustrating because most of it will be hitting 80+ FPS. I ended up playing the game on Windows on a laptop via an external R9 270X which ran with max settings and just about never fell below 60fps. On Linux my Ryzen 5 [email protected] with a R9 285 cannot compete! So a piece of code is seriously bottlenecking somewhere.
ROTT using Vulkan instead gives me much higher hopes for good performance though.

I'm happy for people who like this series. I thought the 2015 Tomb Raider was a thoroughly mediocre on-a-rails experience, so I won't bother buying this one, but the good news is that there are so many top-quality games available for Linux these days that I can afford to be picky. :D
I think that's a little unfair. It certainly isn't nearly as good as the original developers - the writers especially - and mainstream reviewers thought it was, but it had its moments. I'm not sure where you're getting “on rails” from. The narrative tends to railroad the player (on at least two occassions, Lara could have shot the boss guy and ended the whole thing there and then, but inexplicably didn't because story), however there were plenty of open areas that rewarded exploration, and until just before the final battle you can return to any of them at any time.
That said, I first played through it on the Xbox 360 and I still haven't bothered to finish it on Linux yet. Like so many modern “AAA” games, it doesn't really invite a second playthrough.

Keep in mind that Linux version of Tomb Raider 2013 was a port of a Windows port made by Nixxes Software of an original Xbox 360 game made by Crystal Dynamics..
Is like to take photocopy from a photocopy... (Remember the 80's?)

It's called "generation loss" and it's still a very relevant problem even in this age of digital technology, for example in lossy compression. :)
Here's my Steam review:Fair enough. I think we're on the same page, just emphasising different parts. :)

I imagine it helps with community goodwill
Do they really need any more goodwill from us now? Is that even possible? :)
The QTEs will annoy me again, I already know that, I just hope the story is good enough so that I will finish it. Can't feral add a skip button for them, pretty please? :)AFAIR, there are very few of QTEs in comparison with TR 2013. But the story is even worse.

Vulkan isn't some magic bullet, it won't improve games that were released before a: the standard even existed, and B: it won't work as well when it isn't built for Vulkan in mind. Adding Vulkan to TR2013 wouldn't really do much.

No, it's not a magic bullet.
But mapping a high-level API to another high-level API(D3D -> OpenGL) can be sub-optimal and hard/impossible to optimize where as mapping to a low level API (D3D -> VK) can generally be done with a lower overhead and present more chances for optimization.
So yes, a VK backend for tr2013 could improve performance.

With supporting Linux one can earn a lot of love, by supporting Mac one can earn a lot of money :)
Anyway, this will be my gaming highlight this year, waiting just a few more weeks wont make any difference.
