Big Robot Ltd has given all owners of The Signal From Tolva a big update with an entirely new area: The Polar Regions.

This new free expansion will give you a new map to explore, new missions and a new story. There's new secrets to discover, some difficult combat and talk of a maze to complete at the end. The new campaign is actually set before the original and it has a new soundtrack too.

I've tested it out myself and it works just as well as the original campaign. It's a strange game really, a lot of it is quite lonely exploration with random sections of combat mixed in. The combat isn't massively exciting either, something about the gunplay just feels too static, it's hard to describe but as an avid FPS fan I don't find the combat all that great. There's a lot worse and it can be quite fun in certain situations, like when you're outnumbered and friendly robots suddenly come running in to help.

It's a nice experience overall and quite a beautiful game, just don't go into it expect some seriously slick FPS action. It's more for those who love a good sci-fi setting with exploration. Nice to see it continued to be updated, especially a whole new campaign for free, it's not often we see that kind of effort.

Here's a few shots from the Linux version:

Performance on highest settings on Linux seems to be okay in the new area, with it staying mostly around 60FPS.

[Please excuse my poor english, I'm not a native speaker]

I liked the game, but I was disappointed by the sudden ending. It gave me the impression of an unfinished game.

What was best was the pace: the game is slow, battles can be tactical, but usually they are very fast. But the core of this game is the exploration. The game world want to tell a great story, but the developers failed to exploit all the potential they had in hands.

In the end this is the typical game that gets a 7/10. Don't buy it if you expect a pure FPS with frantic combat. Buy if you liked the first Far Cry.

I'm actually glad I bought this.
Did not have a chance to give it a go , but free content updates usually mean the devs actually care about their games.

Got it, haven't started it yet. Lucky to get this expansion before beginning play.

Better late then never. They promised it for Christmas ot New Year, but then...nothing. Personally i stopped actively waiting for it and now it here.
well, almost here - dont see update on GOG yet, probably several days of delay is OK.

One of the most beautiful graphics I've seen in a while, not in the Everspace spectacular way, but rather a in more Borderlands-esque style. Space ships/weapons/artifacts design for example, I can't really put a finger on it, but is really a stylish game.
It indeed finished rather abruptly leaving me wanting for more, I guess my wish was granted.

Good review, right. But i think "the core of this game is the exploration" is not entirely right. Actually, core of the game is feeling of loneliness in mostly uninhabited region. When you march in desert or cross hills with nobody around on serene sunrise it quite strange yet tranquil feeling.

And then BOOM and these pesky bandits\zealots.

As for exploration in pure form i thinks game offers little too thin amount of things to explore. There is absolutely stunning places like stone pillars fields or derelict ruins but often its just empty fields.

And yes, i seen a lot of reviews telling its just "bad FPS", so dont get it if you expect something like Half-Life.

Putting new maps aside i really interested in that new info about Signal will bring this new campaign, cause in main campaign you get some hints only in end and never ever even close to real answer.

If anything, this game does not need more land. It was boring enough that I couldn't force myself to finish. Signal from Tolva feels less like a game and more like a game engine sample project. Sorry to be so negative.

I can definitely see it not being everyone's cup of tea. But oh yes, it needs moar land, I explored every corner of the map and still want more. Something in this game is strangely addictive.
Sorry to be so positive :)

Good for you, as the ending is also extremely disappointing :(

It has some good sides to it this game, but overall it left me wondering why the story and overall game-play seemed very much half-a**ed... 3/10 I would say overall, but it could have easily been a 7/10 with a bit of extra effort put into it. Adding more land definitely isn't what is needed though :(
