For those interested to know, the former Linux dev lead at Feral Interactive is now working at Unity.

I noticed earlier this week, as Marc posted a hint about it on his personal Twitter (I need to get me one of those sweet Unity tops to add to my collection). Now I've had a chance to personally speak to him, it's all very much confirmed.

It's funny really, as when I spoke to him previously I asked about porting other games and he said:

I'd aim bigger and work somewhere bringing more than just one game to Linux

Well—a game engine is one way to do it!

This is good, as it means a very popular game engine used by many developers, now has even more Linux expertise in-house. Considering Unity has had a number of rather annoying Linux-specific issues lately, hopefully Unity will continue to get more spit and polish for Linux games.

Imo this is the best possible move he could've done after leaving Feral. Unity definitely needs to get some Linux kinks out of it's engine and Marc is just the man to do it.

I wish him the best of luck, but we all know he doesn't need it. :D

OK, but I'm curious, was he hired because of his Mac/Linux expertise, or that's inconsequential?
I mean, is his Linux knowledge gonna be put to good use, or he will be just another Unity developer?
Because, I'd love to laugh maniacally while petting my Persian cat and say: Good, we have our man inside!

I was about to write the same - with the possible exception of Unreal. They really could use some help there too, to put it mildly.

But yeah, Unity is probably the way forward for us, and an engine that has proven its worth. So this is really good news either way, and losing out on Unity would likely be a bigger catastrophe for us than losing Unreal, all taken into consideration.

Yes his comment was intressting, but it doesnt confirm mutch. That could mean anything really. But I wish him the best at unity ^_^

Isn't Life is Strange: Before the Storm using Unity?

He probably has enjoyed working with the Unity team, and in collaborating with them to resolve issues on both ends found it was a good fit.

Hey! Maybe there will be a fix on the first Torchlight where we can see the character's faces :D It would also be nice to get this one on Steam. I have both of them, but the first Torchlight is off in its own folder while its sequel is in Steam.

Seriously, though, I think this is an amazing move for exactly the reasons mentioned in the article. As long as Feral continues doing what they do, this is nothing but good news!

I was very confused at first because my mind went to the DE Unity not the game engine Unity. Upon reading makes sense haha. Hopefully he can help make Unity better for LInux because it has gotten steadily worse over the last 6-12 months. Never thought I would see the day I hope for a game to use UE4 over Unity for Linux.

Speaking about Linux developers going away, Valve's SteamOS maintainer looks like he's gone too.
John Vert, a developer that according to Linkedin he Ported Steam client to Linux. Built and maintained SteamOS, a Debian Linux derivative aimed at living-room PC devices running Steam Big Picture and Steam games. Ported SteamVR and OpenVR to Linux is now listed there as working for Valve from Sept 2012 to Feb 2018.
He was active on SteamOS forum until April though.

I doubt they would port some part of the "creative suite" without the rest, looking at their current business model. Of course, this isn't likely to happen any time soon.
