While it's sad we don't have Subnautica, it seems we will be getting to explore the oceans with Beyond Blue [Official Site, Steam] due out next year.

Beyond Blue, from the developer of Never Alone plans to release in "Early 2019" with Linux support. Check out the trailer below:

Looks absolutely gorgeous and it's going to be more of a factual game than a fantasy. According to Engadget, it's inspired by the BBC's Blue Planet II series (which was excellent watching) and they've been talking to scientists about it too.

For additional confirmation, they replied to our Twitter message about Linux support to confirm it with a simple "Yes indeed!".

About the game:

Set in the near future, players will probe the mysteries of our ocean through the eyes of Mirai, the lead on a newly formed research team that will use groundbreaking technologies to see, hear, and sense the ocean in a more meaningful way than has ever been attempted and sense the soul of some of the world’s most magnificent and intelligent creatures. The game will feature both an evocative narrative and high level resource management, challenging the player to make high-stakes decisions and prioritize which objectives can be successfully achieved during the crew’s expedition.

You can follow and wishlist it on Steam.  I could easily see myself losing hours to this!

This sounds cool. I hope there's a "free explore" mode where you don't have to worry about resource management. That sounds too much like a job. :D

Yay, under-ocean swimmin' explorin' game on Linux! Oh, and one minor correction. Where it says, "While it's sad we don't have Subnautica ... " I'm pretty sure it should read, "While it's a travesty and fucking ridiculous we don't have Subnautica ... " ;)

I'm very interested in this. I think it'll be one of those games that I'll play on my projector for the immersion.

This looks interesting. If the game captures the diversity of ocean life (perhaps even scientifically correct!) and combines it with interesting and usable game mechanics it really could be(come) something awesome.

Wishlisted with a faint hope it might come to Linux, I probably can de-wishlist Subnautica now.

I enjoyed Never Alone so I am looking forward to this. Hopefully it sees a DRM free release like Never Alone did. Those that wish to see one can vote here:

What's the story with Aquanox Deep Descent by the way? They said in the past, that Linux version is a possibility.

Nice! Wishlisted!

Definitly looking forward to that! Seems a bit more like ABZU though?

@Shmerl: As a backer I somewhat recently got an email about some Aquanox multiplayer test or so if I recall correctly. Taking much longer than expected I guess but still on track?

But they didn't include Linux in the campaign goals, so I assume it's not going to come out at release time? Did they mention anything about further plans?

Just the checked Beyond Blue site - it's fancy, I like the interactive visuals where you can change the camera view :) I hope they'll release the game on GOG too.

The Endless Ocean series on the Nintendo Wii are some of my all-time favorite "casual" exploration games. They're just so relaxing and mesmerizing, and I've been hoping for a long time that someone would bring something similar to the PC. Looks like I might finally get my wish.

Might almost be worth buying a SteamLink so I can play it from my couch on the "big screen".

Both endless ocean games should run fine with the Dolphin Emu on Linux ;)

The challenge in that case is to get Dolphin EMU running.

Never Alone was excellent. Very keen to see how this pans out.

Blue Planet II is one of my favorites. If this can be "Blue Planet II: The Game" I will be a happy man.

Oh, and if it sells DRM-free.

This is getting a bit off topic, but at least on Ubuntu the Dev. PPA works exellent. In my experience definitly one of the easier Emus to get running :)

I'm still buthurt about not getting Subnautica. That was a potential game of the year for me.
Sil_el_mot Jun 15, 2018
huh. i wished they would also cover VR. would love a fancy diving-game in vr

I suppose I should look into it just to have an alternative to play my Wii games, but really, it's much easier to simply fire up my Wii U and play my Endless Ocean games that way.

Still, this game looks fantastic. I like that it's going to include more "gamey" elements like resource management and so on, but I hope it's unrestricted enough to allow for the relaxed, free-form play of Endless Ocean.
