Set in the same universe as the Wild Terra MMORPG, Corrupted combines some basic RPG elements with all the action of wave defense. I gave the game a quick look and found little to enjoy.

Corrupted has been in Early Access since the beginning of the month. It follows a warrior who is looking for his disappeared sister and a hunter who decides to help him. Each chapter is its own level and each level is pretty much the same. You’re at a location and waves of enemies spawn and you, and a variable number of NPC allies, have to kill them all to proceed. It’s a very simple action RPG-type deal with not much in the way of payoff.

Just about everything about the game feels rough. Sure, that’s the purported point of a game launching in Early Access, but core gameplay mechanics just feel janky and unresponsive. Aiming and hitting at target is stupidly frustrating at times as the direction you point doesn’t necessarily translate into the exact direction your weapon will travel. Add to that that the enemy hit box isn’t always clear and that’s a lot of times you’ll fail to do any damage. Abilities and skills you unlock and can equip likewise feature this problem, making energy-expensive abilities or slow-firing weapons nearly pointless. It’s one thing to miss because you mistime a projectile’s travel time and quite another to miss because you can’t hit what you’re pointing at.

Skills and weapons are unlocked with experience that’s gained after doing a level but there’s not that much room for actual variety of setups. Things you unlock tend to generally be harder-hitting or more protective, so there’s little reason to equip your loadout with anything but the latest and greatest.

The AI is likewise painfully basic, with companions getting stuck behind walls and doors while creatures simply attack the thing closest to them. And don’t get me started on the lackluster sound effects and music.

Maybe the game will shape up during its Early Access period and correct all these deficiencies. Until then, however, I’ll unambiguously recommend that you stay away from Corrupted.

You can grab Corrupted on Steam.

History, sci-fi, technology, cooking, writing and playing games are things I enjoy very much. I'm always keen to try different genres of games and discover all the gems out there.

Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.
