Fans of Spelunky will be pleased to know that running Spelunky Classic HD on Linux is now a Snap, literally.

To install it, you need Snap package support of course (install instructions here). Once you have that setup, installing it couldn't be easier! You can run these simple commands in terminal:

snap install spelunky
snap connect spelunky:joystick

If you're on Ubuntu, you can also visit the store entry for it on the snapcraft website for a direct install link which will open up your Software Centre directly to the game.

To be clear, this is not the same version of Spelunky that's on Steam, this is the classic version. It's using the source code from this GitHub repository, which adds a couple of extra features like different aspect ratios, touch input support and more. The Snap was made by Martin Wimpress, one of the same people behind the recent Snap package of TrackMania Nations Forever.

Really sweet to see more games get the Snap package treatment, for the times when you just want something really simple and easy to get you going. Runs quite nicely in my testing with keyboard controls, although I couldn't get my Steam Controller to be picked up properly even while using SC Controller.

I'd rather see the Steam version ported to Linux (thankfully it works quite well with Wine). Or upcoming Spelunky 2.

Was always disappointed that the official version never had Linux support since it should have been a simple enough game to port, but this is the next best thing.

It can't get my 360 joypad working. It works great with trackmania, but with spelunky, only the "A" button works.

It is possible to rebind the keys, but none of the button are recognized.

And it is possible to play the game with a keyboard, but good luck with that...

In the terminal, I get this :
Gamepad connected: Microsoft X-Box 360 pad
ERROR!!! :: Failed to open file: assets/stats.txt
ERROR!!! :: Failed to open file: assets/gamepad.cfg

I don't know if the errors are related with the gamepad problem.

As much as I'd like to play it I'm not having Snap on my system, Malware on Windows is enough of a headache for me without adding it into Linux with Snap.

Quoting: GuestNo need to install this (snap). You can get the game from itch.io.

(And they even have a client for installation, which seems to be the most important thing for many....)

I think I'm having one of those days today, reading but not having it sink in properly, thanks for the pointer. :D I now have it & even after all this time I still suck at the game, hahahaha.

This is interesting. I got the game from the Humble Bundle but didn't know that we are allowed to tinker around with it.
Would be interesting to see how much effort it is to port it to enigma-dev game engine.

Never played it before. But already killed myself several times launching the bomb instead of the rope :P I had a game called Spelunker on my Atari800 (and still play it now and then in the emulator...). First thought it's the same game, but it is not.

Spelunker was an asshole of a game! The Arcade game isn't even as hard as the Atari version. It's exactly what I think of whenever I think of Spelunky. Wasn't there another Spelunker game that came out recently? Anyhow I think they're all sort of based on the old Arcade.
