The strategy game Sudden Strike 4 got some new content a little while ago which allows players to fight parts of the Winter War and the Continuation War as either side. A few other changes were made to the base game with an accompanying patch.

Sudden Strike 4 places players in command of an army during the Second World War, thrusting players in missions that reflect the various important battles during that conflict. The game eschews many things common in the RTS genre such as base-building and accumulation of resources and instead focuses more on tactical decisions and combined arms capabilities of your forces. Liam generally enjoyed his time with the game, though he did note lackluster skirmish maps and a bit of lack of depth in places.

Finland: Winter Storm is the second piece of DLC released for the game and, as you might imagine from the title, it focuses on Finland’s wars with the Soviet Union. There is a new mini-campaign with three missions per side as well as new commanders and vehicles to play around with. The new tanks, like the KV-1, look particularly good to a history nerd like me.

A rather sizable patch was also released alongside this latest DLC and, alongside the usual bugfixes and balance tweaks, has some new and enhanced content. The skirmish AI has been improved and should be able to better use transports as well as manage their supply and repair vehicles. The multiplayer result screen also now features some more stats where you can see how well you did compared to others. And, lastly, a pair of two new multiplayer maps based on Finland have also been added to the game.

You can pick up Finland: Winter Storm on Steam, the Humble Store or GOG.

History, sci-fi, technology, cooking, writing and playing games are things I enjoy very much. I'm always keen to try different genres of games and discover all the gems out there.

Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.

I'd be interested in re-playing Talvisota, but how good is the game in general?

Quoting: GuestLiam, in spite of my googling i do not undertand well what you mean by the eschewing base building. You mean you do not build bases at all ?

Liam didn't write this article, BTRE did, but yes, that's correct - no bases.

It is basically more like Company Of Heroes or Dawn Of War 2 than it is like Starcraft or Dawn Of War 1.

There is no base building. You get a few units at the start of each mission and various reinforcements.

In skirmish and multiplayer you get to buy more units via points you earn by capturing and holding various strategic points across the map.

I really like the concept overall. It's not too deep and not too shallow. Units have ammo, fuel and various damage indicators that you need to manage. You can also pause the game in the missions and skirmish mode to issue lots of orders.

The gameplay feels very realistic as the combat is more slow paced than other WW2 strategy games. You actually have to consider things like movement speed and fuel when trying to blitz across the map.

The support commander is the only one that can repair mechanical units up to 50% hit points. The other commanders can only repair damaged components.
